Inside Chelle’s Super Eagles master plan: Huge scouting mission reshaping Nigeria’s next-generation

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle is relentless in his work to search the world for the next Super Eagles stars to rebuild his team into a continental powerhouse, Afrik-Foot reports.

Key to achieving that dream is a massive scouting project that integrates more than 500 Nigeria-eligible players being tracked in the country and around the world.

The Franco-Malian coach, who took charge in early 2025 before agreeing a contract extension recently, has made elite player recruitment a big priority after Nigeria failed to qualify for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Rather than relying on the same established names, Chelle wants to create a larger and more competitive player pool capable of challenging for future Africa Cup of Nations titles and returning Nigeria to the FIFA World Cup.

Sources close to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) told Afrik-Foot that Chelle and his scouting team now monitor at least 80 matches every weekend across Europe, Africa and Nigeria. Their database already contains more than 500 players who are eligible to represent the Super Eagles.

The strategy follows a model similar to the one used successfully by Morocco in recent years. Chelle’s additional role as head coach of Nigeria’s Under-23 team allows him to identify talented dual-nationality players much earlier and introduce them into Nigeria’s youth setup before they commit their international future elsewhere.

Among the biggest names under close observation is Arsenal duo of Ethan Nwaneri and Ife Ibrahim. Saudi-based George Ilenikhena, Brighton’s Zadok Abu Yohanna, Augsburg’s youngster Uchenna Ogundu, Reims teen striker Hafiz Umar and Promise Malinga of Kristiansund are all on the radar of Chelle among many others.

With Millwall winger Femi Azeez already handed his Super Eagles debut, a few others could follow in the coming weeks. One of those is VfL Bochum midfielder Francis Onyeka, who is viewed as a possible long-term creative midfielder capable of supporting Alex Iwobi in the future.

The project has already produced results. Azeez, Benjamin Fredrick, Akor Adams, Tolu Arokodare, Ryan Alebiosu, Chibuike Nwaiwu, Emmanuel Fernandez, Salim Fago Lawal, Rafiu Durosinmi and Tochukwu Nnadi have all made their Super Eagles debuts after impressing Chelle’s scouting department.

Super Eagles: Domestic talent receives equal Chelle attention

While much attention has focused on recruiting foreign-born players, Chelle has made it equally clear that outstanding performers in Nigerian football will receive opportunities if they earn them.

Over recent months, the Super Eagles boss has become a regular face at football grounds across Nigeria. He has attended Nigeria Premier Football League matches, youth competitions and the Nigeria National League Super Four tournament, travelling to venues including Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan and Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

His commitment has impressed many within Nigerian football. Fans and observers have repeatedly reported seeing Chelle at youth tournaments, Under-17 national team training sessions and several domestic league matches. These are key pointers to the amount of work taking place away from international fixtures.

That approach has already opened the door for players such as Papa Daniel, Kayode Bankole, Chibueze Oputa (Rangers FC), Ayobami Adeoye (Shooting Stars), and Oyedokun Junior (Ikorodu City), who earned places in Chelle’s Super Eagles squads after catching the attention of the coaching staff.

The NFF is also expected to strengthen the project further by creating a dedicated scouting department focused on identifying talents from the NPFL and Nigeria National League. In addition, one or two leading NPFL coaches are expected to join Chelle’s U23 technical team as assistant coaches, improving communication between the domestic leagues and the national team setup.

Despite casting a wide scouting net, Chelle has maintained strict standards for selection. He has repeatedly stressed that reputation alone will not guarantee a place in his squad. Any new player must prove capable of outperforming experienced internationals through consistent performances.

The coach also places great importance on tactical discipline, physical fitness and a player’s ability to execute modern football systems. Every performance is supported by extensive data analysis and video review before any invitation is sent out.

With Chelle, Nigeria’s Super Eagles have turned a page following the disappointment of missing the 2026 World Cup and the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title. If the Malian tactician commits to his current, it is only a matter of time before a stronger, younger and more competitive Super Eagles dominate African and global football.
