Chelsea and Arsenal are set to compete for the signature of Brentford defender Michael Kayode as interest grows in one of the Premier League’s most promising young full-backs, Afrik-Foot reports.
Kayode, 21, has enjoyed a rapid rise in European football over the last few seasons. After developing in the academies of Juventus and ACF Fiorentina, the defender gradually built a reputation for his energetic defending and tactical discipline.
His breakthrough moment at youth international level came when he helped Italy win the UEFA European Under‑19 Championship in 2023, even scoring the decisive goal against Portugal in the final.
Kayode later progressed into Fiorentina’s first team and featured regularly, including during the club’s run to the final of the UEFA Europa Conference League against Olympiacos FC in 2024.

His steady performances eventually earned him a move to Brentford in January 2025, initially on loan before the Premier League club decided to make the transfer permanent. Since then, Kayode has adapted well to English football and has become an increasingly reliable presence in Brentford’s defence.
During the current campaign, he has made around 35 appearances in all competitions, attracting praise for his physical approach and ability to win the ball back under pressure. Kayode has won 163 duels in the Premier League this season, placing him among the most effective full-backs in that category.
Only defenders such as Neco Williams of Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth’s Adrien Truffert have recorded comparable numbers among players in his position.
Despite standing at just 5ft 10in, Kayode has also impressed in the air, winning more than 60 percent of his aerial duels. Combined with his powerful long throws, often compared to set-pieces because of the danger they create, he has become a useful attacking outlet as well as a strong defender.

Those qualities have drawn the attention of several clubs across Europe. While Arsenal have been strongly linked with the defender in recent weeks, Chelsea are also eager to bring him to Stamford Bridge, according to Ekrem Konur.
Chelsea already possess established right-back options in Reece James and Malo Gusto, yet the club are still keen to strengthen the position with another young defender capable of competing at the highest level.
However, the two London rivals are not the only teams monitoring Kayode’s progress. Interest has also emerged from Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and German side Borussia Dortmund. PSG, Juventus and Manchester United are also reportedly monitoring the situation around Kayode.
Brentford are known to be firm negotiators in the transfer market, meaning any club hoping to sign the defender may need to pay well above his estimated valuation of around £30 million.

Chelsea-target Kayode’s Nigeria links and international future
While Kayode’s club future is attracting attention, his international allegiance is another topic closely watched by fans.
The Brentford defender was born in Borgomanero, Italy, to Nigerian parents of Yoruba heritage, making him eligible to represent the two football nations.
So far, Italy appear to be leading the race for his international services. Kayode has already represented the country at youth levels, including the under-18, under-19 and under-21 sides. His performances for the Italian youth teams have placed him firmly on the radar of national selectors.

The defender has openly admitted that playing for Italy remains a major ambition. However, he has also expressed pride in his Nigerian heritage and appreciation for the support he receives from Nigerian fans.
For Nigeria, the right-back role is already competitive. Players such as Ola Aina, Bright Osayi‑Samuel and emerging talent Ryan Alebiosu are currently among the options available to the Super Eagles. Even so, many supporters believe Kayode’s athleticism and defensive consistency could make him a valuable addition to the squad if he eventually chooses to represent Nigeria.
The 21-year-old, however, remains focused on performing well for Brentford. Strong displays in the Premier League could not only strengthen his chances of securing a high-profile transfer to clubs such as Chelsea or Arsenal but also help determine where his international future ultimately lies.
