Wilfred Ndidi’s recent performance against Manchester United has stirred conversation, with Chelsea icon Frank Lampard stepping up to defend the Leicester City star.
Ndidi, who had two good chances to score, missed both opportunities, leaving fans wondering what went wrong with the defensive midfielder in front of the net.
Leicester struggled from the start, with Bruno Fernandes celebrating his 250th appearance for United by scoring the opening goal.
The Foxes' hopes were dimmed further in the 38th minute when Fernandes’ header deflected off a Leicester defender for an own goal. United continued their dominance, adding another late in the second half with a strike from Alejandro Garnacho.
Chelsea legend backs Ndidi’s efforts despite setback
In the game’s crucial moment, Ndidi, typically stationed in Leicester’s defensive line, was in the perfect spot but missed a key chance.
Lampard, Chelsea’s all-time top scorer, defended Ndidi’s efforts on Premier League Productions, noting that goalscoring is not a skill that the midfielder is often called upon to use.
Lampard praised Leicester’s tactical approach and Ndidi’s well-timed runs, acknowledging the challenge he faced when moving into an unfamiliar position.
Despite missing these opportunities, Lampard stressed that Ndidi’s effort showed his willingness to adapt to different roles.
“I think he should. It's good play from Leicester; they are playing through the lines well, which we know they can do.
“It's a good run, ball from Manchester United, but he gets there. As soon as he gets that touch away, he's got to move his feet quickly.
“Great timing and great pass to find him. Take a shot; you might hit it through the crowd; it might bounce over the goalkeeper's legs.
“Probably a midfielder is not used to being in those positions so much. Not sharp enough to kind of get his shot away there,” the former Chelsea boss said.
In his Premier League career, Ndidi has netted only seven goals. The Super Eagles midfielder will now look to regroup as he joins his national team for international duty.
