Italian media reports indicate that Chelsea have decided to pivot from Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen in what is a major alteration to their transfer strategy.
The striker is widely recognised as one of Europe's most promising talents, highlighted by his exceptional performance during the 2022/23 season, where he scored 31 goals and provided five assists for Napoli, helping the club secure their first Scudetto since 1990.
While his 2023/24 season was somewhat affected by a hamstring injury and his involvement in the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) with Nigeria, Osimhen still managed to register 17 goals and four assists in 32 appearances.
The 25-year-old forward is looking to leave Serie A, but Napoli's €130 million release clause has deterred potential suitors, including Chelsea.
The Blues had been involved in detailed discussions with Napoli for several weeks, evaluating a potential swap deal involving Romelu Lukaku and a substantial cash payment.
However, the negotiations have proved complex and slow, leading Chelsea to explore alternative options.
Chelsea's alternative to Victor Osimhen revealed
Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported on Monday that Chelsea have concluded their pursuit of Victor Osimhen and have redirected their focus to Atlético Madrid's Samu Omorodion.
The 20-year-old Spanish forward of Nigerian descent is reportedly set to join Chelsea after agreeing to a seven-year contract. The transfer deal is expected to cost the London club £35 million.
However, Di Marzio noted that Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Chelsea's London rivals Arsenal remain interested in the Nigeria international, with the former reportedly having agreed terms with the player.
Osimhen is currently a part of Napoli's preseason training but has yet to appear in any of the club's friendly matches.
