Legendary former Chelsea midfielder and now Coventry City boss Frank Lampard has praised Super Eagles star Frank Onyeka after an impressive first outing for Coventry City on Monday night, Afrik-Foot reports.
Onyeka was handed his debut start as Coventry beat Middlesbrough 3-1 at the Coventry Building Society Arena to move back to the top of the Championship table.
The Nigerian midfielder only joined Coventry on loan from Brentford during the winter transfer window and was meant to play earlier, but the birth of his baby delayed his first appearance. When his moment finally arrived, Onyeka made sure it counted.

He brought energy, strength and calm to the middle of the pitch, helping Coventry compete strongly even during periods when Middlesbrough had more of the ball. He passed well, won tackles, made interceptions and stayed disciplined despite picking up a yellow card in the first half.
After the match, Lampard was full of praise at the post-match press conference.
“Yes, absolutely. It was brilliant. His performance, his power in winning the ball, his quality of understanding when to jump and press, and what he’s like in duels, but also his quality of play.
“It was a massive performance from him, and he gets a booking — it’s never a booking. I’m thinking, if he tires, is he going to come off? But I thought he dealt with that situation well.
“An outstanding debut. To come from the Premier League and step up to this level of game so quickly in his career, to make his debut in that game and perform as he did, was a great sign. I am really pleased for him.”

Wright’s hat-trick sends Coventry City back to the summit
While Onyeka shone in midfield, the main goals came from American striker Haji Wright, who enjoyed a dream night with three goals.
Coventry started brightly and nearly scored early when Wright’s header hit the post. Their pressure paid off in the 21st minute when Jack Rudoni set up Wright to calmly open the scoring.
After half-time, goalkeeper Carl Rushworth’s long kick found Wright, who ran into the box and finished low into the corner to make it 2–0.

Middlesbrough tried to respond and pulled one back through Riley McGree after hitting the woodwork earlier, but Coventry stayed in control.
Late in the game, a handball in the box gave Coventry a penalty. Wright stepped up confidently, scored his third, and sealed the victory.
Onyeka was warmly applauded when he was substituted in the 75th minute, a clear sign the home fans were delighted with their new midfielder.
With Coventry back on top of the table and Onyeka settling in quickly, Lampard’s side look stronger as the promotion race heats up.
