Who is Chibby Nwoko? Everything to know about Fulham’s new Super Eagles call-up

Chibuzo Chibby Nwoko has taken another step towards playing international football for Nigeria after accepting his first Super Eagles invitation for the friendly against Russia, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 20-year-old Fulham midfielder was born in London and developed in England, but his family connection to Nigeria comes through his father, whose roots are in Umuahia South, Abia State.

Nwoko’s call-up is also significant because his previous international experience came with England. He played three matches for the England Under-18s in 2023, but those appearances were friendlies, giving him a route to pursue Nigeria at senior level.

Chibby Nwoko: From Chelsea to Fulham

Chibby Nwoko began his development at Chelsea before joining Fulham at Under-12 level. At Fulham, he developed into a calm and technical midfielder with a strong passing range, capable of playing as a six, eight or 10.

He spent several years moving through Fulham’s academy system before gaining experience in senior football.

His development accelerated during the second half of the 2025-26 season when Fulham sent him on loan to Forest Green Rovers. Nwoko made 22 appearances and scored once, while starting 17 matches in a row during his spell with the National League club.

That run gave him regular exposure to senior football rather than just academy competition.

Nwoko returned to Fulham and made his first-team debut on August 27 against AFC Wimbledon in the Carabao Cup. He came on as a substitute and played 22 minutes in Fulham’s 3-0 victory at Craven Cottage.

He also produced two assists in Fulham Under-21s’ 4-3 Premier League 2 win over Burnley Under-21s in August.

Chibby Nwoko: England experience and Nigeria connection

Chibby Nwoko represented England Under-18s in June 2023 during the International Tournament of Lisbon.

He played against Norway, Australia and Portugal, making three appearances and completing 103 minutes across the tournament. All three games were friendlies rather than competitive England fixtures.

FIFA’s international eligibility rules allow players who have not been tied to a country through the relevant senior-level competitive appearances to pursue another association when they satisfy the applicable conditions. Nwoko’s Nigerian connection is through his father’s family in Abia State, giving him the descent link required under FIFA’s eligibility framework where applicable. FIFA’s rules recognise birth, descent and certain residence conditions when determining eligibility.

Soccernet reports that Nwoko previously hoped to receive invitations from Nigeria’s Flying Eagles and Olympic Eagles, but those opportunities did not materialise.

His first Nigeria opportunity has instead arrived with the senior team after he moved into senior club football in England.

Chibby Nwoko: Why FIFA clarification matters

There is still an administrative issue around Nwoko’s international switch.

The Nigeria Football Federation has sought further clarification from FIFA over his previous England youth appearances, even though the three matches in question were friendlies.

FIFA confirmed on September 10, 2026 that it had updated its guidance on eligibility and changes of association, including clarification on what counts as an “A” international match and when a player must submit an eligibility or change-of-association request.

The issue is therefore not simply whether Nwoko played for England. The nature of those matches, his nationality, his Nigerian connection and the documentation supporting his status all form part of the eligibility picture.

FIFA also operates a public platform for approved changes of association, while its Players’ Status Chamber handles requests involving eligibility and changes of association.

Nwoko also needs to renew his expired Nigerian passport and secure a National Identification Number. Those documents form part of the administrative work surrounding his Nigeria involvement.

Why Chelle chose Russia rather than the AFCON qualifiers

Eric Chelle had considered Nwoko for Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Madagascar and Guinea-Bissau.

The coach eventually selected him for the Russia friendly instead because more clarity was needed over his previous England youth appearances before putting him into competitive international action.

Nigeria’s meeting with Russia is scheduled for October 6 in Nizhny Novgorod.

That fixture gives Nwoko an opportunity to train with the Super Eagles and make his case without immediately being placed in an AFCON qualifying match.

Chelle’s decision also fits the player’s development. Nwoko had only just made his Fulham senior debut after gaining his main senior experience with Forest Green Rovers.

What Chibby Nwoko can offer Nigeria

Nwoko gives Chelle a left-footed midfield option who can operate in several central positions.

With the capacity to play as a six, eight or 10, the youngster can sit in front of the defence, operate as a central midfielder or move higher into an attacking midfield role.

His passing range can help Nigeria build attacks from deeper areas, while his ability to break up play gives him defensive value. That flexibility could allow Chelle to use him differently depending on the midfield combination.

Alongside Wilfred Ndidi, Nwoko could be used higher up the pitch while Ndidi provides greater defensive protection. With Alex Iwobi, his passing ability could support a more technical midfield, while Iwobi’s experience can help him understand the demands of international football.

A pairing with Frank Onyeka would offer another possible balance, with Nwoko providing a left-footed passing option while Onyeka supplies energy and defensive work.

Nwoko’s ability to play as a six also means he could compete for deeper midfield minutes rather than being restricted to an attacking role.

The Russia friendly will give Chelle the first opportunity to see how those qualities translate into the Super Eagles’ system.

At 20, Nwoko arrives without senior international experience, but his route to the squad has included Chelsea’s academy, Fulham’s youth teams, a sustained senior loan spell, a first-team appearance and three England Under-18 friendlies.

The next step is to settle the administrative and eligibility questions and show what he can offer when he joins Nigeria’s senior squad.
