Chibuike Nwaiwu’s 8.7 rating vs Samsunspor: 3 things Trabzonspor & Nigeria fans missed

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Chibuike Nwaiwu delivered a standout performance for Trabzonspor with a goal in their 3-0 win over Samsunspor, earning an 8.7 rating from FotMob.

The Nigerian centre-back doubled Trabzonspor’s lead in the 38th minute, reacting quickest after goalkeeper Okan Kocuk failed to keep out Ernest Muçi’s effort.

Guinea-Bissau forward Franculino Dju, who put Nigeria to the sword only days ago, scored Trabzonspor’s third just two minutes later, putting the visitors firmly in control before half-time.

Nwaiwu’s afternoon was about more than his goal. The defender helped Trabzonspor secure a clean sheet after teammate Melih Kabasakal was sent off in the 43rd minute.

3 things Nwaiwu did to stand out vs Samsunspor

1. Nwaiwu showed a striker’s instinct inside the box

Nwaiwu’s goal was a reminder that defenders can make a difference at both ends of the pitch.

After Muçi’s effort was saved, the Nigerian reacted quickly to the rebound and finished from close range. His awareness and positioning meant he was ready to capitalise when the goalkeeper could not secure the ball.

The goal also came at a crucial point in the match. Trabzonspor had taken the lead through Muçi in the 27th minute, but Nwaiwu’s finish gave them breathing room before Franculino struck again.

For a centre-back, goals are a bonus, not the primary responsibility. However, the defender’s alertness in the penalty area gave Trabzonspor another attacking outlet in Paul Onuachu’s absence.

2. The clean sheet became more significant after the red card

Trabzonspor’s three-goal advantage was established before Kabasakal’s dismissal, but the sending-off changed the demands of the second half.

With their numbers reduced, Trabzonspor had to manage the game carefully and protect their lead. Samsunspor finished the match with 53% possession and 23 shots, but the visitors stood firm.

Nwaiwu contributed to Trabzonspor’s success by creating a big chance, providing five key passes into the opposition box, and accruing 15 defensive involvements. He did all of this without losing a single ground duel.

3. Nwaiwu is pushing beyond his ceiling

Performances like this can help Nwaiwu build momentum as he seeks to establish himself as a starter in Eric Chelle’s Super Eagles squad.

The 23-year-old has already earned international recognition, but regular performances at club level remain important if he is to become a trusted option in Nigeria’s defence.

His display against Samsunspor offered two clear positives. He contributed a goal and helped his side keep a clean sheet in a difficult circumstance.

One match rating cannot determine a player’s standing, and consistency against different opponents will matter over time. Nonetheless, Nwaiwu’s performance gives Nigeria another reason to monitor his development closely.

Tottenham Hotspur and Fulham came knocking on his door last summer, but if he’s consistent with performances like this, even bigger clubs will be monitoring the Trabzonspor superstar.

For the Super Eagles, the hope will be that he can turn strong club performances into a sustained claim for regular starts, boosting the competition between himself, Igoh Ogbu, Emmanuel Fernandez, Benjamin Fredrick and Semi Ajayi, with Calvin Bassey remaining untouchable in the Nigerian National team.
