Chidera Ejuke: Why Sunderland may be the perfect next step for Sevilla winger

Published on by

Super Eagles and Sevilla winger Chidera Ejuke has been linked with a move away from the Spanish La Liga after starting just six league games in the just-concluded season, Afrik Foot reports.

From his breakout years in Norway to spells in the Netherlands, Russia, Germany and Spain, the 28-year-old has built a reputation as a player who can get past any defenders, but his end product never truly matured.

After two inconsistent campaigns with Sevilla, Ejuke looks set for another move. As per Futbol Finanzas, Sunderland, Bayer Leverkusen, Fulham and Leeds United are all monitoring the Nigerian international ahead of the summer transfer window.

With just one year remaining on his current contract, Sevilla are willing to listen to offers as they seek to generate funds and create room in their wage structure.

Why Fulham and Leeds could appeal to Ejuke

Fulham have established themselves as a stable Premier League side since gaining promotion in 2022 under Marco Silva, and could offer Ejuke the chance to test himself in England’s top flight.

The London club also boasts several Nigerian stars and has become an appealing destination in recent years.

Leeds, meanwhile, continue to rebuild after securing their Premier League status and are expected to strengthen their attacking options this summer. A player of Ejuke’s profile could add creativity and unpredictability in wide areas.

Bayer 04 Leverkusen also remain an intriguing option. The Nigerian previously spent time in Germany during a loan spell at Hertha Berlin and would already be familiar with the demands of the Bundesliga, although he scored no goals in his time at Berlin.

However, playing time remains paramount. At Fulham, competition for wide positions remains fierce, with Oscar Bobb and Kevin as assured options. Harry Wilson’s contract situation is still up in the air, and the Cottagers are undecided about making Samuel Chukwueze’s deal a permanent one.

While Leeds are expected to bring in several attacking reinforcements as they seek to avoid a relegation battle next season, there’s been no clear summer transfer plan laid out by Daniel Farke’s side so far.

Leverkusen, meanwhile, offer European football but also have greater squad depth and higher expectations.

For a player whose goal is to be in every weekend’s lineup, joining a club where minutes are not guaranteed could prove risky.

Why Sunderland may be the perfect next step

Sunderland are searching for players capable of adding creativity and experience to a young squad after running out of steam in the second half of the season, and Ejuke’s profile fits the bill.

His ability to beat defenders in one-versus-one situations remains one of his greatest strengths. Even during a frustrating season at Sevilla, flashes of his dribbling quality stood out.

Sunderland’s system also appears well-suited to his strengths. Regis Le Bris favours aggressive transitions and quick attacks, an approach that could allow Ejuke to receive the ball in space and attack defenders more frequently than he might at a club that prefers to hold onto the ball.

Additionally, he’ll secure more than the six starts he did for Sevilla at Sunderland, should he make the move.

At 28, Ejuke is entering what should be the peak years of his career. Sitting on the bench at a bigger club may not help either his development or his international ambitions.

With Eric Chelle rebuilding the Super Eagles ahead of the 2027 AFCON tournament, consistent club performances will be vital for players hoping to remain in contention.

Sevilla are prepared to cash in while they still can; Luis Garcia’s side are demanding just six million euros to part ways with the Nigerian.
