Chippa United: Can Stanley Nwabali reclaim his Super Eagles number 1 shirt with PSL return?

Published on by

On Sunday, Premier Soccer League side Chippa United announced the re-signing of Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali, five months after he left the club, Afrik-Foot reports.

When he initially left the Chilli Boys in February, the belief was that a big move was in the offing. Recall that prior to that time, he had been linked with several clubs on the continent.

However, he failed to join a new club. Days turned to weeks, and weeks then turned to months. Nwabali was linked to several clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs, Raja Casablanca, Orlando Pirates, Simba FC, Al Merreikh, and even a Saudi Arabian club, but none of the talks materialized.

Now, he has returned to Chippa United. It is difficult to say whether he simply wanted a break or if he had to return to Chippa due to his inability to secure a transfer.

Regardless of his reasons, he will now be looking to return to action as soon as possible and get his career back on track.

What Has Stanley Nwabali’s Break Cost Him?

Nwabali spent five months without playing professional football, which is a significant amount of time. His absence has definitely taken a toll, and he will have to find a way to repair the damage those months of inactivity have caused.

First of all, he has lost momentum. He will need a few weeks to regain his sharpness before he can return to active football. Luckily for him, this is the off-season, so he has enough time on his hands.

However, it is unknown whether he will reclaim the captain’s armband now that he is back with the team. Recall that he captained the Chilli Boys for two seasons before his exit. It remains to be seen whether he will be reinstated as skipper after leaving the club at a critical point of the campaign last season.

Finally, and most importantly, his international career should be weighing on his mind.

Stanley Nwabali made his Super Eagles debut under Gernot Rohr in 2021, when he conceded four goals in a defeat against Mexico. However, he did not become a regular until 2024 at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

At the time, coach Jose Peseiro re-introduced him to the team due to the lack of assurance Maduka Okoye and Francis Uzoho were providing in goal.

His arrival brought much-needed balance to the Super Eagles’ goalkeeping department, and he went on to deliver a stellar performance in that AFCON, playing a key role in Nigeria’s second-place finish.

Since then, he had been the first-choice keeper for Nigeria, permanently keeping both Okoye and Uzoho on the bench.

But his recent absence ensured that Okoye reclaimed the number 1 shirt. Okoye was brilliant in the games in which Eric Chelle started him against Poland and Portugal.

Okoye had been performing well at the club level, and when presented with the opportunity to play for the national team, the Udinese shot-stopper took it with both hands.

Now, it appears that Nwabali won’t be able to reclaim his spot unless something happens to Okoye or the latter becomes inconsistent. There is also Arthur Okonkwo, who looked good during the Unity Cup.

At 30, Nwabali still has a few years of good football in him, so he will definitely be eyeing that number 1 jersey. The Super Eagles will next assemble in September, and it will be interesting to see what decision Chelle makes.
