Stanley Nwabali: Can potential Saudi transfer revamp his career?

Published on by

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been linked with a transfer to Saudi Arabia following a four-month period without a club, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 30-year-old shot-stopper left Chippa United in February, ending a four-year stint at the club. While he was heavily linked with several teams across Africa at the time, a deal failed to materialize, leaving him as a free agent since his exit.

However, reports emerged on Thursday that the former Enyimba goalkeeper is currently in discussions with a Saudi Arabian side, with a resolution expected in the coming days. But the identity of the club remains undisclosed — leaving it unclear whether he is joining a top-flight or second-tier side.

What Stanley Nwabali’s Time Away Has Cost Him

Stanley Nwabali’s career has faced a significant downturn since leaving Chippa United. Before his clubless phase, he had momentum and held a high reputation across the continent, but he is slowly groing out of relevance.

Most importantly, his prolonged absence has cost him his status as Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper. Despite consistent backing from coach Eric Chelle — even amidst public calls to favor Maduka Okoye — Nwabali’s decision to remain clubless opened the door for his Udinese rival. Since stepping in, the former Watford goalkeeper has proven his mettle.

During Nigeria’s friendly matches against Poland and Portugal, Okoye was magnificent. His calmness and brilliant shot-stopping ability have made it clear that Nwabali has been relegated to the number-two position.

Also, any club interested in signing the Super Eagles star must account for the significant time he will need to regain full match fitness, and that makes him a bit unattractive.

Can Stanley Nwabali’s Career Recover?

Stanley Nwabali’s link to Saudi Arabia comes at a very important time, as it offers him a much-needed opportunity to return to action. Asides from regaining his form, a move to the Middle East would likely result in a significant salary increase.

Securing a new club would also allow him to re-enter the conversation for the Super Eagles squad. With competition in the national team’s goalkeeper department growing stiffer by the day, this is an opportune moment for Nwabali to force his way back into the reckoning.

Depending on the club he joins, he may also enjoy greater visibility than he did in his previous role.

While nothing is confirmed, Nwabali and Super Eagles fans will be hopeful that his future will be resolved as quickly as possible.
