Former Rangers midfielder Andy Halliday has offered insights on Rangers forward Cyriel Dessers' striking abilities and challenges.
While praising Dessers’ remarkable speed and strength, Halliday touched on the inconsistency that often plagues the forward. He noted that the Nigeria international could have easily scored multiple goals in the recent match against Dundee but emphasises that finding the right balance between composure and instinct is key to unlocking his true potential.
The Nigeria international has made a strong start to the 2024/25 campaign, scoring seven goals in nine matches, a notable improvement from the two goals he managed in the same period during the 2023/24 season.
However, despite his individual success, the former Feyenoord striker has yet to win over all sections of the Rangers fanbase, with some supporters calling for his exit or reduced game time in favour of new signing Hamza Igmane.
Halliday: Dessers must find consistency to maximise his potential
In an interview as per Rangers News, Halliday acknowledged Dessers' impressive physical attributes, saying, “He is quick, powerful, strong as anything.”
However, he also pointed out the frustration stemming from Dessers' inconsistency, noting, “Don’t get me wrong, he is frustrating in terms of that lack of consistency.
“The amount of chances he misses, he could have had four or five easily [against Dundee, but] the second one is a great finish.”
“You talk about Dessers with some of the missed chances. I think, sometimes, he is too composed. He wants to take that extra touch and chop across the defender.
“For the second, he usually takes a touch. But he just guides it into the bottom corner.”
