It's a packed year for the Super Eagles, with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations set to take place in Morocco.

However, before turning their attention to continental glory, the three-time AFCON champions will first focus on securing qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Nigeria are currently third in their six-team World Cup qualifying group, with 10 points from seven matches.

Group leaders South Africa sit at the top with 16 points, followed by Benin on 11 points. Rwanda, with eight points, are in fourth. Zimbabwe remains at the bottom with four points, trailing Lesotho by two points.

Ahead of the return of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, the Super Eagles participated in the Unity Cup, beating Ghana’s Black Stars in the latest installment of their historic rivalry, before overcoming Jamaica on penalties (following a 2-2 draw in normal time) to claim the invitational trophy.

On September 6, they returned to the qualifying series with a hard-fought win over Rwanda in Uyo, before a draw against South Africa that has all but extinguished any hope of World Cup qualification..

When is Nigeria next match?

The meeting between Nigeria's Super Eagles and Lesotho is set to take place on October 10, 2025.

Nigeria FIFA World Cup qualifying schedule, results

The Super Eagles were drawn in Group C alongside South Africa, Rwanda, Lesotho, Zimbabwe and Benin.

Nigeria started their campaign with a draw against Lesotho, followed by another stalemate with Zimbabwe.

They then drew South Africa at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, before Benin handed them their first defeat in the World Cup qualifiers after coming from behind to win 2-1 at the Felix Houphouet Boigny Stadium in Abidjan.

The Super Eagles got some reprieve with a 2-0 away win in Rwanda on Match day five of the qualifiers to ease frayed nerves. However, they hit a bump when they were held to a 1-1 draw by bottom-placed Zimbabwe, which further dented Nigeria's World Cup hopes. Their slim win over Rwanda briefly saw a flicker of optimism, but following the draw with South Africa, Nigeria's fate is no longer in their hands.

Only one team will secure an automatic 2026 FIFA World Cup spot, while the second-placed team will have to go through a playoff stage for a chance to qualify.
