Dorgu: Brother of Manchester United star joins Bulgarian top-flight side

Two-time Bulgarian champions Botev Plovdiv have completed the signing of Nigeria-eligible forward Benjamin Ifenna Dorgu, Afrik-Foot reports.

Born in Denmark, the 19-year-old has signed a two-year contract with the Bulgarian club following a successful trial period, keeping him at the club until 2028. Benjamin is the younger brother of Patrick Dorgu, who joined Manchester United during the January 2025 transfer window.

The teenager came through the academy ranks at Danish side FC Køge and made his senior debut during the 2023-24 season, scoring three goals in 19 league appearances in the Danish First Division.

Last season, Benjamin Dorgu moved to the youth setup of Italian club Genoa, where he impressed with eight goals and four assists before returning to FC Køge for the current campaign, where he added two more goals before sealing his move to Botev Plovdiv.

Nigerian prospect Benjamin Ifenna Dorgu will now continue his development in the Bulgarian Efbet League after completing his transfer to Botev Plovdiv.

The Canaries have built a strong reputation for developing African talents, with several players progressing from the club to top European clubs in recent years.

The Bulgarian side currently have two Nigerians in their squad, which could help Benjamin settle quickly at the club. Super Eagles winger Samuel Kalu, who was part of Nigeria’s bronze-winning squad at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, has been with the club since 2025 and youngster Williams Chimezie is also part of the team.

Benjamin has already been introduced to the setup after making a late substitute appearance in Botev Plovdiv’s 2-0 defeat to Cherno More in their previous outing, with the club currently pushing for European qualification.

“It’s a step up compared to his previous Division 2 club. He is positive about the move and ready to compete in the Efbet League — Bulgarian elite league,” the player’s agency said.

Dorgu: Nigeria’s next big star?

While Patrick Dorgu currently represents Denmark at international level, Benjamin is still eligible to play for Nigeria due to his heritage.

However, the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) and head coach Eric Chelle may face a difficult task persuading the teenager to commit his international future to Nigeria.

Benjamin’s progress in Bulgaria will be closely monitored, especially as Chelle continues to search for young talents capable of strengthening the Super Eagles, as they look to secure qualification for the 2030 FIFA World Cup after missing out on the last two editions.

Although the 19-year-old is not expected to start Botev Plovdiv’s next match against Arda Kardzhali on Tuesday, he will hope to make an impact from the bench in that clash and in their remaining matches this season.
