Super Eagles: Key factor behind Ibrahim Buhari’s move to Austria Wien

Super Eagles invitee Ibrahim Buhari has taken the next major step in his career after completing a move to Austrian Bundesliga side Austria Wien this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old began his professional career with Plateau United in the Nigeria Premier Football League, where he spent three years before securing a move to Swedish club Elfsborg in 2022.

Since arriving in Sweden, Buhari established himself as one of Elfsborg’s most dependable defenders and his consistent performances made him a key player for the club and attracted interest from elsewhere in Europe.

He has now completed a move to Austria Wien, signing a three-year contract that will keep him at the club until the summer of 2029.

The Super Eagles invitee expressed his excitement after sealing the transfer, describing Austria Wien as one of the biggest clubs in Austria.

“I am very happy to have joined this club. It is one of the biggest clubs in Austria and I am here to give my best for the team in the new season”, the 24-year-old said, via Footy-Africa.

“It has been a long journey for me, from Zaria to making my mark in Nigerian football with Plateau United, and then moving to Elfsborg in Sweden. Every step has played an important role in my development.”

Speaking after completing the transfer, Buhari explained that his desire to challenge himself and win trophies was one of the major reasons behind his decision to join Austria Wien.

The Nigerian defender described the move as another important chapter in his career and said he is determined to help the club achieve success.

“This is another chapter in my career and another challenge that I am looking forward to. I will give everything for this club and hopefully we can win titles together”, he continued. 

“Moving from Sweden to Austria shows that my hard work is paying off, but I know there is still a long way to go. I will continue working hard every day to become the best professional footballer I can be.

“The fans should expect me to give one hundred percent every time I wear this shirt. I can’t wait to get started.”

With the transfer now completed, Buhari will be hoping to enjoy a successful spell in Austria and fulfill his ambition of winning trophies with the club.

The move could also strengthen his chances of returning to the Super Eagles setup. Buhari has previously received an invitation to the Nigerian national team but is yet to make his senior debut.

A strong campaign with Austria Wien could put him back on the radar of Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers later this year.
