Former Nigeria international Friday Ekpo has described the Super Eagles’ 2-1 win over Iran as an important moment in the team’s rebuilding journey, Afrik-Foot reports.
The 1992 Africa Cup of Nations star stressed that Nigeria’s performance against the Lions of Iran offers real encouragement for what lies ahead.
Nigeria made a sharp start to the game, taking the lead in just six minutes when Moses Simon finished from close range after a well-worked move involving Samuel Chukwueze. The early goal set the tone for a confident first-half display, with the team pressing high and controlling large spells of possession.
The second goal came early in the second half, as Akor Adams converted from close range following a neat assist from Ademola Lookman. Iran responded through Mehdi Taremi, but Nigeria stayed organised to secure the win. It was a win that delighted Ekpo.

“This is a good victory for the Super Eagles against Iran considering the fact that this is the first time the players are playing together after the conclusion of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations,” Ekpo told CompleteSports.
“This victory will definitely help boost the confidence of the players now that the rebuilding process has kick started. I expect more of this performance when the team confront Jordan in their final game.”
Ekpo also pointed to the importance of building early ahead of future competitions.
“We need to build on what we have at the moment. And I am glad that the rebuilding process has started ahead of the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. We don’t want a repeat of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, so the earlier we start the process, the better for the national team.”

Super Eagles in control as Jordan clash offers clear path to trophy
The Super Eagles’ positive result against Iran, combined with Jordan’s 2-2 draw against Costa Rica, has placed Nigeria in a strong position to win the four-nation tournament.
The equation is now clear. If the Super Eagles defeat Jordan in their final match, they will lift the trophy. Even a draw could be enough, depending on the outcome between Iran and Costa Rica.

Jordan looked set to complicate matters after racing into a 2-0 lead against Costa Rica. However, a late collapse saw them concede twice, including a stoppage-time equaliser, turning a likely win into a draw.
That shift in momentum has handed Nigeria the advantage. With three points already secured and confidence growing, the Super Eagles head into the final game knowing that their fate is firmly in their own hands.
Super Eagles, ranked 26th in the world, will be favourites to claim a win over 64th-ranked Jordan, who are preparing for their debut appearance at the FIFA World Cup.
