Super Eagles forward Nathan Tella delivered a decisive performance, scoring the winner for Bayer Leverkusen in their 1-0 victory over fierce rivals Bayern Munich in the German Cup at the Allianz Arena on Tuesday night.
The 24-year-old overcame recent challenges at the club to come off the bench and secure Leverkusen’s place in the next round of the competition.
The game’s defining moment came early, as Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer was sent off in the 17th minute, leaving the Bavarians to play with ten men.
Despite being a man down, Bayern dominated much of the game, with Michael Olise and Kingsley Coman coming close to breaking the deadlock. However, the first half ended goalless.
The turning point came in the 69th minute when substitute Nathan Tella, brought on for the injured Patrick Schick, headed home a stunning cross to give Leverkusen the lead.
Bayern mounted a spirited effort to equalize, but Leverkusen’s resolute defence held firm, securing a hard-fought win and advancing to the quarter-finals of the German Cup.
Nathan Tella’s performance in numbers vs. Bayern Munich
Tella was introduced in the 61st minute and made an immediate impact, scoring the only goal of the game.
- Passing: He completed two of his three attempted passes, achieving a 67% success rate.
- Shooting: Tella registered two shots on target and missed one big chance.
- Possession: He lost possession twice and recorded just nine touches in his 29 minutes on the pitch.
- Defensive Contribution: Tella made one successful tackle and won both ground duels he contested, although he lost his only aerial duel.
Despite limited time on the field, Tella’s clinical finishing and effective play were enough to seal a crucial victory for Leverkusen.
Tella, who has been in the news about a potential move away from the club in January, will hope the goal and his overall performance can convince Xabi Alonso to give him more playing time at Leverkusen
