Gary Lineker has issued a public apology to Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen after previously questioning the forward’s reputation.
The former Chelsea target has established himself as one of the most prolific attackers in European football over recent seasons. Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United were both linked with a move for the Super Eagles star. Neither side pushed through a deal, instead opting for alternative signings, while Osimhen sealed a permanent switch to Turkish champions Galatasaray.
The 26-year-old has hit the ground running since his move, scoring decisive goals, including the winner against Liverpool in the Champions League earlier this week. That display has forced Lineker into a climbdown over his earlier comments.

Lineker pleads for Osimhen’s forgiveness
Speaking on his podcast, the England legend admitted he was wrong to suggest that Osimhen occasionally “went missing”, ostensibly a reference to truancy.
He said: “I remember I intimated that perhaps he – I heard a rumour that he goes missing sometimes, and I believe that is actually completely not the case. I’m sorry about that. You shouldn’t spout rumours on these things. My bad, my bad on that.”

Lineker went on to praise the Nigerian’s all-round qualities, recalling his first impression of the striker in European competition. He added: “I saw him play against Leicester a few years ago and he was exceptional. You really get a feel for somebody when you’re in a stadium. He’s quick, he’s tall, he’s a good finisher, he’s brilliant in the air, he’s a hell of a player.”
Osimhen initially joined Galatasaray on loan from Napoli last season, scoring a club-record 37 goals in all competitions. He has already netted three times in his first five appearances this term, underlining why he remains one of the most talked-about strikers in world football.
