Former Chelsea midfielder Carney Chukwuemeka has officially switched his international allegiance from England to Austria, according to Afrik-Foot.
Chukwuemeka’s international future has been the subject of intense speculation for several years.
Having recently stabilized his club career by joining Borussia Dortmund—following a difficult spell at Chelsea where he struggled for consistent playing time—the midfielder has now made a big decision regarding his national team career.

Born in Austria to Nigerian parents before moving to England as a child, the former Aston Villa academy man was eligible to represent any of the three nations.
While Chukwuemeka was a prominent fixture in England’s youth setups, capped up to the U-20 level, his lack of a senior call-up for the Three Lions made him to explore other options.
Despite his eligibility for Nigeria, and recent hints from Super Eagles coach Éric Chelle regarding new additions to the roster, the 22-year-old has decided to snub the three-time AFCON champions.

Chukwuemeka is known for his exceptional close control, dribbling, and ability to drive play from the midfield, and he was seen by many as a natural successor or even a replacement for some players in Nigeria’s aging midfield.
FIFA Confirms Carney Chukwuemeka’s Switch From England To Austria

The switch was officially ratified by FIFA on Monday, March 9. This confirmation means that once Chukwuemeka makes his debut for the Austrian Wunderteam, he will be permanently ineligible to represent either England or Nigeria.
The likely reason for his decision is the 2026 FIFA World Cup - Nigeria failed to qualify, but Austria did. And with his quality, he should be able to nick a place in Ralf Rangnick’s squad.
This news comes as a significant blow to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). With veteran midfielders like Alex Iwobi and Wilfred Ndidi approaching the latter stages of their international careers, Chukwuemeka was viewed as a high-profile reinforcement for the Super Eagles’ midfield.
Nevertheless, coach Éric Chelle must now look elsewhere. Fortunately, the Super Eagles still boast promising young talents in midfield, including Tochukwu Nnadi, Raphael Onyedika, and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru. These players will be expected to step up in the coming years.
