Ex-Super Eagles coach ‘extremely happy’ for Lookman after sealing UCL semifinal spot

Published on by

Former Super Eagles coach Sunday Oliseh has hailed Ademola Lookman, after he played a decisive role in helping Atletico Madrid reach the semifinals of the UEFA Champions League, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian forward scored the decisive goal that put his side through to the final four for the first time in nine years, as they progressed on a 3-2 aggregate scoreline despite losing 2-1 at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano on Tuesday night.

The three-time Europa League winners entered the second leg with a two-goal advantage from their victory at Camp Nou, but Barcelona responded fiercely, swiftly reversing the tie with two first-half goals, placing Atletico under significant pressure.

The 28-year-old stepped up when it mattered most and scored a crucial goal to pull his side back into control and ultimately seal their progress to the semifinal for a seventh time in the club’s history as they continue their pursuit of a first-ever title in the competition.

Ex-Super Eagles star hails Lookman’s contribution in Atletico’s progress

Since arriving at Atletico Madrid earlier in the year, Ademola Lookman has made a strong impact, and only Julian Alvarez (11) has made more goal contributions than his tally of 10 across all competitions.

His latest goal also took his tally in the Champions League to eight, placing him among Nigeria’s top scorers in the competition alongside Victor Osimhen (16) and Obafemi Martins (9).

Reacting to his performance, Oliseh praised Lookman’s growing importance and composure on the big stage.

“Ademola Lookman has just qualified for the Champions League semi-finals with Atletico Madrid despite a 2-1 loss to Barcelona”, Oliseh revealed in a post on X.

“Talk about being an absolutely influential player. I am extremely happy for him. His goal today made the difference, and he is also showing remarkable maturity.”

Atletico will now face either Arsenal or Sporting CP in the semifinals, with the next round set to begin later this month.

Lookman will also be hoping to continue his fine form for Atletico Madrid, as they chase a place in the final of the competition for the first time since 2016.
