Fernandez vs Saliba: Six qualities that put Super Eagles star on Arsenal radar after defensive setback

Published on by

Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez could be set for an exit from Rangers this summer, with Arsenal reportedly ready to step up their pursuit, Afrik-Foot reports.

Fernandez joined the Gers from Peterborough for around £3.5 million last summer and has enjoyed a standout debut season in Scotland.

The Nigeria international made 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals and his performances earned him Rangers Men’s Player of the Season for the 2025–26 campaign. He was also the only Rangers player included in the PFA Scotland Scottish Premiership Team of the Season, marking a remarkable debut campaign.

Arsenal ready to step up pursuit of Emmanuel Fernandez

Fernandez has attracted attention from several clubs across Europe’s top five leagues with his strong displays, including Arsenal ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to reports from Football Insider, the Premier League champions are ready to intensify their pursuit due to uncertainty over William Saliba’s availability at the start of the 2026–27 season.

The French defender, who has formed a formidable partnership with Gabriel Magalhães, is reportedly struggling with back pain that worsened after Arsenal’s UEFA Champions League final defeat to PSG last weekend.

Although the 25-year-old is expected to feature for France at the upcoming World Cup, he could undergo surgery afterwards, potentially ruling him out for several months.

That situation could leave Arsenal short of defensive options, prompting them to consider a move for Emmanuel Fernandez from Rangers in order to strengthen their backline.

Why Arsenal want Emmanuel Fernandez

Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez has enjoyed a rapid rise and could secure a move to one of Europe’s biggest clubs in the coming months, despite being relatively unknown just over a year ago.

However, several aspects of his game explain why he is highly rated and seen as a strong fit for Mikel Arteta’s system at Arsenal.

One key strength of the Nigerian defender’s game is his aerial dominance. He won 71% of his aerial duels in the SPFL last season, compared to Saliba’s 55.3%, showing his strength in the air and ability to deal with physical forwards.

The 24-year-old also stands out in ground duels, with a 61.8% success rate over the course of the season for Rangers, compared to Saliba’s 58.6% in the Premier League.

The Super Eagles star is also a threat in attacking situations. Fernandez scored five goals in 27 SPFL appearances, more than Saliba managed in the Premier League. Most of his goals came from set piece situations, which is an important asset given Arsenal’s strength from dead-ball situations this season.

The Gunners scored 29 goals from set-pieces in their title-winning campaign, with 19 of them from corner kicks and Fernandez will thrive in these kind of situations.

The former Peterborough man also stands out defensively for his interceptions, tackles, clearances, and blocks, with his numbers racking up higher than Saliba’s metrics for Arsenal.

Fernandez also possesses great leadership skills and is very composed under pressure. The 24-year-old has also emerged as one of the leading candidates to become Rangers captain if he remains at the club next season.

Another major strength is his passing range. Fernandez is comfortable in possession and is also capable of switching play effectively to launch counter-attacks with long ball forwards.

All these qualities have placed him firmly on the radar of Arsenal, who could reignite their pursuit ahead of the summer transfer window.

While a step up to the Premier League would be very massive, Fernandez has already shown the qualities needed to succeed at the top level and could be set for the biggest move of his career if Arsenal decide to formalize their interest.
