The Super Eagles of Nigeria have slipped one place to 6th in Africa and 39th globally, according to the latest FIFA rankings released on Thursday.
Despite remaining one of Africa’s football powerhouses, the slight drop in points from 1498.93 to 1498.02 has seen Nigeria fall out of the top five on the continent, with Tunisia overtaking them.
This latest ranking reflects the increasing competition within African football, with Morocco continuing to dominate the rankings.
The Atlas Lions, who had a stellar 2022 World Cup campaign, are the top-ranked team in Africa, followed by reigning African champions Senegal, Egypt, Ivory Coast, and Tunisia rounding out the top five.

Nigeria’s drop can be attributed to a marginal point reduction, despite securing four points from their recent 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The Super Eagles recorded a 2-0 victory against Benin in Uyo, followed by a goalless draw against Rwanda in Kigali. While these results were decent, they did little to improve Nigeria’s standing, as the team remains static in 39th place globally.
Nigeria's best placing in the FIFA world rankings was in April, 1994 as Nigeria placed fifth globally and was number one in Africa.
