One-dimensional Chukwueze challenged by Milan boss Fonseca

AC Milan manager Paulo Fonseca has stressed the importance of growth for Samuel Chukwueze as he adapts to the rigours of Serie A.

Since his arrival from Villarreal in the summer of 2023, the Super Eagles winger has had a mixed spell with the Rossoneri, struggling to establish himself as a mainstay in the team.

Last season, under former manager Stefano Pioli, the 25-year-old made over 30 appearances, primarily coming off the bench as he played a supporting role to American forward Christian Pulisic.

Following a superb preseason ahead of the 2024/25 campaign, many believed that Chukwueze was poised to cement his place in the Milan setup under Fonseca. However, he has struggled to displace Pulisic from the starting XI, preventing him from making the desired impact.

Chukwueze has made five appearances this season, starting in two of those matches, and has averaged 32 minutes of play per game.

The Portuguese trainer believes that the Nigerian must continue to develop his game in competitive matches, where the intensity and pace demand quick decision-making and tactical awareness.

Ahead of Friday's Serie A clash against Lecce, Fonseca said, “He had a very good preseason when he had space against big teams. When we came here, against Torino and Lazio, I think Chukwu was not as good as in preseason.

“It’s not a problem of quality but of confidence.

“He needs to gain confidence and play in this context: in Serie A he has no space, he has to make movements at the right time, he has little time to decide.

“He came on and did well against Inter; he has to grow in games maybe like tomorrow’s, without space. He must grow in this.”
