Nottingham Forest legend Lewis McGugan has highlighted the importance of Taiwo Awoniyi to the club, even as Chris Wood's recent form has elevated his position as the first-choice striker.
Awoniyi, who once had a starter’s shirt for the Reds, has seen his playing time significantly reduced this season under manager Nuno Espírito Santo. The Nigeria striker has made just two starts across all competitions, with his last appearance coming in Forest's recent defeat to Fulham in the Premier League.
Meanwhile, Chris Wood has emerged as a key player for Forest, scoring seven goals in nine league games. His impressive performances have earned him the starting spot and have somewhat limited Awoniyi's contributions.
McGugan sees silver lining with Awoniyi’s bench role
Speaking on the Forest Focus Podcast, McGugan remarked that Wood’s strong form has actually benefitted his Nigerian comrade by allowing him a longer recovery from his recent injury setbacks.
“We’re in such a good place with Chris Wood, it takes the pressure off of Taiwo Awoniyi,” McGugan explained. “It removes the necessity to rush him back and risk his body breaking down.
“That’s been the case in the past, and it hasn’t done him or the team any good.”
McGugan believes that the former Liverpool youngster will soon play a crucial role again for Forest as the season progresses, despite Wood’s current dominance.
“This form with Wood allows [Awoniyi] to gradually build back his strength and get back to where he was pre-injuries.
“There will come a point where we need him – Chris Wood is doing brilliantly right now – but when the time comes for Taiwo, he’ll hopefully be ready and can come good again.”
Forest, who have risen to an impressive 7th in the Premier League standings and are eyeing a top-six challenge, could benefit from Awoniyi rediscovering his scoring touch soon.
