Frank Lampard singles out Onyeka’s addition in Coventry win over Stoke

Coventry City head coach Frank Lampard has singled out Frank Onyeka’s relentless running as a key factor in their victory against Stoke City yesterday, Afrik Foot reports.

The 28-year-old midfielder joined the Sky Blue Stars from Brentford on loan till the end of the season back in January.

While he’s only played four games for the EFL Championship table-toppers, Onyeka has brought stability to a somewhat shaky side and has propelled their faith to believing they can claim a place in the English top-flight at the end of the season.

Coventry: Lampard pleased with Onyeka’s pressing

Last time out against Sheffield United, the ex-Augsburg midfielder was given the man of the match award, although Jack Rudoni and Haji Wright were the scorers for Coventry.

The pair were on the scoresheet against Stoke City again, but this time, Rudoni nicked a 94th-minute winner to send Frank Lampard’s side eight points clear at the top of the summit.

Speaking after the game, the ex-Chelsea boss lauded Rudoni’s perfomance, while citing Onyeka’s relentless running as a huge factor that allowed the English midfielder focus more on creating and scoring with the ball.

“Rudi’s performance (against Stoke) was a really high level in the first half when he was receiving between lines,” said Lampard in his post-match assessment in quotes revealed by the Coventry Telegraph.

“They couldn’t really press us because they had Rudi behind, and if they tried to deal with Rudi, it would bring them deeper because Grimesy and Frank (Onyeka) were controlling a lot of the game. But Rudi, individually, his feet, his awareness – he deserved a winner.

“He absolutely deserves it for his all-around performance. He’s back. He’s back at his best, and when he hasn’t been back, it’s been because of the injuries and the bits that he’s had. He’s a top player,” the 2012 UEFA Champions League winner concluded.

Frank Onyeka will join Coventry City permanently if the club can secure promotion to the English Premier League.
