Galatasaray new captain: How Victor Osimhen surpassed Chelsea great Didier Drogba in Istanbul

Published on by

Victor Osimhen has reached another historic milestone at Galatasaray after reports reveal that the Nigerian striker has been named the club’s new permanent captain ahead of the 2026-27 season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The appointment crowns an incredible two-year spell in Istanbul for the 27-year-old, who arrived on loan from Napoli in the summer of 2024 before completing a record permanent transfer a year later.

Osimhen’s first campaign ended with a domestic double as Galatasaray won both the Turkish Süper Lig and the Turkish Cup. He followed that success by firing the Yellow and Reds to another league title during the 2025-26 season, making it back-to-back championships.

Despite attracting interest from several of Europe’s biggest clubs after scoring goals at an astonishing rate, Galatasaray have reportedly convinced the Super Eagles star to remain in Istanbul for at least one more season. One of the biggest rewards for staying appears to be the captain’s armband, making him the face of the club both on and off the pitch.

The promotion also places Osimhen in a unique position among African football legends who have represented Galatasaray, including Chelsea icon Didier Drogba.

Osimhen: Record signing and club leader

Osimhen is entering his third season with Galatasaray, but few players have made such a rapid impact in the club’s modern history.

His debut season produced 35 goals across all competitions, helping Galatasaray secure the league and cup double while breaking Mario Jardel’s long-standing record for the most goals scored by a foreign player in a single Turkish season.

His second year was equally successful. His goals inspired another Süper Lig title as Galatasaray successfully defended their crown and reached the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League for the first time in over a decade.

The reported departure of Argentine forward Mauro Icardi has now opened the door for a change in leadership. After serving as one of the team’s vice-captains last season, Osimhen has reportedly been chosen by head coach Okan Buruk and the club’s hierarchy to become the new permanent captain.

Osimhen already has leadership experience with Nigeria, where he serves as first vice-captain of the Super Eagles and has captained the national team on several occasions.

Reports also suggest he could inherit Galatasaray’s famous No. 9 shirt, replacing the temporary No. 45 he has worn since arriving from Napoli.

The numbers that put Osimhen ahead of Drogba

Didier Drogba remains one of Africa’s greatest footballers and enjoyed a successful spell at Galatasaray between 2013 and 2014.

However, statistically, Osimhen has already gone well beyond what the former Chelsea striker achieved in Istanbul.

In just 59 appearances, Osimhen has scored 50 goals and provided eight assists. That gives him an outstanding scoring rate of 0.85 goals per game. Drogba scored 20 goals and produced 13 assists in 53 appearances, averaging 0.38 goals per game. Both players have three domestic trophies with Galatasaray.

Osimhen lifted two Süper Lig titles in 2024-25 and 2025-26 alongside one Turkish Cup. Drogba won the 2012-13 league title, the 2013 Turkish Super Cup and the 2013-14 Turkish Cup.

Osimhen has also reached another major milestone in Europe. During the 2025-26 UEFA Champions League campaign, he scored seven goals to move ahead of Drogba’s Galatasaray-era Champions League scoring record. His speed in reaching 50 goals has also made history, as no Galatasaray player has reached that landmark faster.

Making history beyond Didier Drogba and other African legends

Beyond the goals, Osimhen’s reported appointment as captain places him ahead of an exalted company of African icons.

Several African stars have worn the Galatasaray captain’s armband during individual matches over the years, but always as stand-in captains when the official club captain left the pitch or was unavailable.

Cameroon legend Rigobert Song occasionally took over leadership duties between 2004 and 2008 because of his experience and commanding presence in defence.

Former Arsenal defender Emmanuel Eboué captained Galatasaray in selected friendlies and during squad rotation after joining the club in 2011.

Drogba also wore the armband on several occasions after arriving in January 2013, usually when regular captain Selçuk İnan had been substituted or rested.

Algerian midfielder Sofiane Feghouli later became another trusted senior player who led the team whenever long-time captain Fernando Muslera was unavailable.

Osimhen’s situation is different. Instead of serving as a temporary or match-day captain, he has been chosen as Galatasaray’s official permanent captain for the new season. This makes him the first African player to hold that position on a full-time basis in the club’s 121-year history.

The decision also strengthens Galatasaray’s efforts to keep a world-class centre-forward admired by half of Europe’s wealthiest clubs.

After delivering two league titles, a Turkish Cup, 50 goals and several club records, Osimhen is no longer simply Galatasaray’s star striker. He is now set to become the symbol of the club’s future.
