Turkish champions Galatasaray have joined the race to sign Super Eagles defender Emmanuel Fernandez this summer, Afrik-Foot reports.
The Rangers centre-back has emerged as one of the most sought-after defenders in the transfer market, with several clubs eager to strengthen their squads ahead of the new season.
Their interest is hardly surprising after Fernandez enjoyed a breakthrough campaign at Rangers, establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers. The 24-year-old made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring six goals for the club.
His impressive performances earned him Rangers’ Men’s Player of the Season award and he was also the club’s only representative in the PFA Scotland Team of the Season after an outstanding individual campaign.

Fernandez’s displays have already attracted interest from Premier League champions Arsenal, French side Rennes, as well as Bundesliga giants Borussia Dortmund and Chelsea.
According to Fotomac, Galatasaray are now the latest club to register their interest in the Nigerian international as they look to strengthen their defence ahead of next season and their pursuit is driven by several factors that make Fernandez an attractive option.
A ready-made replacement for Davinson Sanchez
Colombian defender Davinson Sanchez is reportedly attracting serious interest ahead of a possible summer exit with Serie A side Como and Spanish giants Real Madrid in the race for the experienced centre-back.
Sanchez has been a key figure since arriving at the club in 2023 and while Galatasaray would not block any exit if their valuation is met, replacing him would be no easy task. However, Fernandez possesses many of the qualities needed to fill that void.
Although the two defenders have different profiles, Fernandez is a more modern centre-back. He is comfortable defending in space, composed on the ball and has already demonstrated his ability to perform consistently at a high level during his excellent season with Rangers.
His impressive passing range and aerial threat from set-pieces would also fit perfectly into Galatasaray’s style of play, with the Turkish champions usually dangerous from dead-ball situations.
Another factor that could ease his transition is the presence of countryman Victor Osimhen, who has become a fan favourite at the club since his arrival in 2024.

A long-term solution in defence for Galatasaray
Galatasaray have also been linked with Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk as they search for defensive reinforcements.
However, at 34, Van Dijk would represent more of a short-term solution despite his quality and experience. While he remains one of Europe’s top defenders, age inevitably limits how long he can serve as the foundation of the club’s defence.
Fernandez, by contrast, is only 24 and still has plenty of room for development. Signing him would give Galatasaray a defender capable of leading their backline for many years and also provide long-term stability. It would also represent an investment in the future rather than simply a temporary fix.
An affordable and available target
Rangers have reportedly valued the Nigerian defender at just over £20 million and the transfer fee is unlikely to be beyond Galatasaray’s reach, particularly if they receive a substantial fee from the potential sale of Davinson Sanchez.
Funds generated from his departure could comfortably help finance Fernandez’s arrival while still leaving room for other summer signings.

Rangers are also unlikely to stand in Fernandez’s way if a suitable offer arrives. The Scottish club have already signed Ben Godfrey from Atalanta as an experienced defensive option, giving them additional cover should Fernandez depart.
With interest in the defender continuing to grow across Europe, it appears increasingly likely that Fernandez could take the next step in his career just one year after arriving at Rangers.
