Galatasaray have continued their search for a long-term replacement for Nigerian striker Victor Osimhen, despite insisting the Super Eagles forward is not for sale, Afrik-Foot reports.
According to a report by Yenimesaj, the Turkish champions are preparing a loan move for young Nigerian forward George Ilenikhena.
The 19-year-old joined Saudi Pro League club Al-Ittihad from Monaco in February 2026 for a massive €33 million fee, becoming one of the most expensive Nigerian teenagers in football history. He signed a contract until June 2029 and was viewed as part of Al-Ittihad’s future plans alongside stars such as Karim Benzema.
However, things have not gone as expected in Saudi Arabia. Ilenikhena has struggled for playing time, making only two league appearances since arriving. The teenager is now believed to be looking for a route back to Europe to continue his development.

Galatasaray are looking to take advantage of the situation. Reports in Turkey suggest the Istanbul giants are preparing a loan offer with an option to buy. The deal would allow the club to assess his progress before making a permanent investment.
Another factor working in Galatasaray’s favour is the Turkish Football Federation’s foreign-player regulations. At 19, Ilenikhena qualifies under the youth category and would not take up one of the club’s senior foreign-player spots.
Galatasaray have also been linked with a move for Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Tolu Arokodare, who is a good friend of Osimhen. It has been claimed that Osimhen recommended Arokodare to Galatasaray as a possible replacement for the departing Mauro Icardi. Should Osimhen, who is wanted by half of Europe’s biggest clubs, leave Istanbul, Ilenikhena will be a better fit than Arokodare to lead Galatasaray’s attack. And here’s why.

Ilenikhena’s playing style is closer to Osimhen’s
One of Osimhen’s biggest strengths is his speed, aggressive pressing, and ability to run behind defenders. Those qualities have made him a nightmare for opposition backlines in Turkey.
Ilenikhena shares many of those same attributes. The young striker is quick, mobile, and comfortable operating in fast attacking systems. During his time at Antwerp and Monaco, he built a reputation for stretching defences with intelligent movement and explosive acceleration.
Arokodare, on the other hand, is a very different type of striker. Standing around 1.98 metres tall, he relies more on physical battles, aerial duels, and hold-up play. While those qualities are valuable, they would require Galatasaray to alter the style that worked so effectively with Osimhen leading the attack.
With Galatasaray hoping to maintain its current attacking identity, Ilenikhena appears to be the more natural fit.

Ilenikhena has already delivered on Europe’s biggest stage
Despite his recent struggles in Saudi Arabia, Ilenikhena’s record in Europe remains highly impressive for a player his age.
The Nigerian youngster became one of the youngest goalscorers in UEFA Champions League history and earned widespread attention after scoring decisive goals against Barcelona during his spells with Royal Antwerp and Monaco. Those performances showed that he can handle pressure at the highest level against elite opposition.
While Arokodare has enjoyed success during parts of his career, he does not possess the same Champions League pedigree. Galatasaray are expected to compete in Europe again next season, making continental experience a major factor in any recruitment decision. Ilenikhena has already shown that big occasions do not intimidate him.

His age gives Galatasaray a huge long-term advantage
Perhaps the strongest argument in Ilenikhena’s favour is his age and future potential. Born in 2006, he is still only 19 and has several years ahead of him to improve. His €33 million transfer to Al-Ittihad shows how highly clubs across Europe and the Middle East rate his talent.
A loan deal would give Galatasaray the opportunity to secure a player whose value could rise significantly if he rediscovers the form that made him one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards.
Arokodare is more experienced, but at 25, he is much closer to his peak years. Ilenikhena offers something different: the possibility of becoming both Osimhen’s sporting successor and a future transfer asset capable of generating a huge profit.
That combination makes the young Nigerian a particularly attractive option for a Galatasaray balancing immediate success with long-term planning.
