Genclerbirligi vs Galatasaray: Preview, h2h, team news, tips as Osimhen targets comeback

Published on by

Galatasaray roll into Ankara on Saturday with the Turkish Super Lig title slipping ever so slightly out of their grip, and Genclerbirligi waiting at the Eryaman Stadium with little to lose and plenty still to fight for.

The defending champions remain top of the pile on 68 points from 29 matches, but a sloppy 1-1 home draw against Kocaelispor in midweek has allowed Fenerbahce to close the gap to just two points. Trabzonspor, four points back, are also still in the frame, which means Okan Buruk’s men cannot afford any more slip-ups between now and the end of the season.

Genclerbirligi, by contrast, are staring down a very different kind of pressure. The Ankara side, back in the top flight after a four-year absence, sit just two points above the drop zone with five matches left to play.

They have not won any of their last eight league matches under returning head coach Volkan Demirel, and a dire run in front of goal has compounded their problems.

There is a strong Nigerian flavour to this contest, even if two of the four Super Eagles/Nigerian names in question will not make the matchday squad.

Galatasaray hope to welcome Victor Osimhen back from his arm injury, while the hosts count former Super Eagles winger Henry Onyekuru and midfielder Peter Etebo among their ranks. There is also the former Nigerian youth international midfielder Tom Dele-Bashiru.

Osimhen has been the standout foreign signing of the Turkish season, with 19 goals and five assists in all competitions before breaking his right forearm in the Champions League tie at Liverpool on March 18.

Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk confirmed this week that the striker has rejoined team training and could feature against Genclerbirligi, albeit likely from the bench with a protective brace.

Onyekuru’s situation, though, has turned into a full-blown saga. The former Galatasaray man joined Genclerbirligi on a free transfer last summer but has flopped badly in Ankara, with no goals and no assists in 19 appearances across all competitions.

Reports in Turkey suggest tensions with management over unpaid wages earlier in the season, and ahead of this fixture, Volkan Demirel has instructed him to train separately from the rest of the squad.

Turkish football reporter Yagiz Sabuncuoglu revealed that the technical staff submitted a report citing Onyekuru’s “inadequate and unmotivated” performance, with an official club statement expected in the coming days. He will not be part of the team to face his former side.

Etebo, meanwhile, is long-term sidelined with an Achilles tendon rupture sustained back in August. Dele-Bashiru, meanwhile, has been a consistent performer, and he is expected to start in the middle of the park for the Red and Blacks.

Match Preview

Galatasaray’s season has started to resemble a tightrope walk. Immediately after the international break, the Lions suffered their first league defeat of the season at Trabzonspor, and while they responded with a 3-1 win away at Goztepe, the draw with Kocaelispor at home in midweek has reintroduced serious jeopardy into what once looked a comfortable title defence.

The champions are still chasing a historic fourth consecutive Super Lig title, which would be the first time any club has managed four in a row in Turkey since Galatasaray themselves did it from 1996 to 2000 under Fatih Terim.

The prize is huge, but so is the scrutiny. Away from RAMS Park, Galatasaray have generally travelled well, though the recent Kocaelispor defeat was their first on the road in the league this season.

Their away record remains the best in the division, and they have lost just one of their last 35 home league matches historically, which underlines the overall quality of the squad.

Genclerbirligi’s season has been a story of survival rather than ambition. Promoted last May as TFF First League runners-up, they began the campaign with five straight defeats before steadying briefly in the autumn.

Since then, their form has cratered badly, and the club has gone through multiple managerial changes in the space of a few months. Volkan Demirel stepped down in December, Haydar Arda Cakmak took temporary charge, and Demirel returned at the start of March after a change in club presidency.

His second spell has yet to produce a single league victory, with Genclerbirligi failing to score in six of their last eight top-flight matches.

Home form offers a small crumb of comfort. The Ankara side have actually been harder to beat at Eryaman Stadium than on the road, with a solid chunk of their points coming in front of their own supporters. But facing the league leaders, even a wounded one, presents a very different challenge.

Galatasaray have won all three of their last meetings with Genclerbirligi, while the hosts have not claimed a single victory against them in any competition since 2018. That kind of psychological burden adds another layer to what is already a lopsided-looking contest on paper.

Head-to-Head

This is a fixture with deep historical roots. The two clubs have met many times in the Super Lig era, and Galatasaray dominate the overall record with 12 wins compared to Genclerbirligi’s three, with five draws.

The reverse fixture earlier this season, played at RAMS Park on November 22, finished 3-2 to Galatasaray in a tighter-than-expected affair. Mauro Icardi, Baris Alper Yilmaz and Ilkay Gundogan scored for the hosts, with M’Baye Niang and Metehan Mimaroglu both finding the net for Genclerbirligi in a spirited performance.

That game produced some eye-watering numbers. Galatasaray enjoyed 72.5% possession and took 28 shots to Genclerbirligi’s 11, but the Ankara side did at least manage to put two goals past the eventual league leaders.

Zoom in further and Galatasaray’s dominance becomes even more stark. The Lions have won their last seven home meetings against Genclerbirligi across all competitions, scored at least three goals in their last five home encounters, and led at both half time and full time in the last four.

Genclerbirligi’s last victory against Galatasaray dates back to a 1-0 win in 2018, and their last away triumph in the fixture came all the way back in 2013. History, in other words, sits firmly with the travelling side.

Team News and Predicted XIs

Galatasaray’s main talking point remains Osimhen. The Nigerian is back in training with a protective brace on his forearm and could feature against Genclerbirligi, though Buruk is expected to ease him back gradually with the Fenerbahce derby on April 26 looming large.

Mauro Icardi has been leading the line in Osimhen’s absence and scored against Genclerbirligi earlier in the season. Baris Alper Yilmaz, deployed as a false nine in the win over Goztepe, is another option in attack after his impressive recent performances.

Abdulkerim Bardakci returns from suspension, which will be a welcome boost for Galatasaray’s defensive structure. However, Metehan Baltaci and Eren Elmali remain unavailable due to their involvement in the ongoing Turkish betting scandal.

Yunus Akgun, Berkan Kutlu and Kaan Ayhan are all sidelined through injury, while Ilkay Gundogan is expected to start after returning from his own calf issue. Leroy Sane, who scored his seventh league goal of the season against Kocaelispor, will be a key creative threat.

For Genclerbirligi, the headline team news is the dramatic exclusion of Onyekuru. The Nigerian international has been instructed to train away from the group after the technical staff raised concerns over his attitude and performances, and will not feature against his former club.

The injury list is long and painful elsewhere. Etebo is out for the season with his Achilles rupture, Moussa Kyabou, Abdullah Sahindere and Emirhan Unal are all absent with knee problems, and Gokhan Akkan and Ensar Kemaloglu are also unavailable.

Dimitrios Goutas has been dealing with suspension issues recently, while Niang, and Sekou Koita, have been in and out of the side. Franco Tongya is likely to feature in a creative role given Onyekuru’s absence.

Predicted Galatasaray XI (4-2-3-1): Cakir; Singo, Sanchez, Bardakci, Jakobs; Torreira, Lemina; Sallai, Sara, Sane; Icardi

Predicted Genclerbirligi XI (4-2-3-1): Velho; Thalisson, Goutas, Zuzek, Hanousek; Dele-Bashiru, Ulgun; Gurpuz, Tongya, Mimaroglu; Koita

Both forwards are their team’s likely starting striker this weekend, with Icardi carrying the scoring burden in Osimhen’s absence and Koita leading Genclerbirligi’s struggling attack.

The Managers

Okan Buruk is chasing history. Since taking charge in 2022, he has guided Galatasaray to three consecutive Super Lig titles and now stands on the brink of a fourth, which would match the club’s own record set between 1996 and 2000.

His win rate at the club is around 81% across more than 130 matches, and he has never lost any of his four previous meetings with Genclerbirligi. However, the recent dropped points against Kocaelispor and the controversy around “internal traitors” leaking team news have added pressure to a man who is usually cool under fire.

Volkan Demirel is in his second spell at Genclerbirligi and currently trying to rescue the Ankara club from what is fast becoming a relegation battle. The former Fenerbahce and Turkey goalkeeper first arrived in the summer but stepped down in December before returning on the back of a change in club presidency in early March.

His second coming has not yet produced a league victory, and the clock is ticking. The decision to banish Onyekuru ahead of this fixture suggests a manager willing to make tough calls, but it is also a sign of a squad in turmoil with the drop zone looming.

Tactical Preview

Galatasaray’s preferred set-up under Buruk has been a fairly orthodox 4-2-3-1, with Torreira and Lemina forming a destroyer-and-distributor pivot in front of the back four. Sane and Sallai stretch the play on either flank, while Gabriel Sara operates between the lines to link midfield and attack.

With Osimhen still easing back, Icardi is likely to lead the line, though Baris Alper Yilmaz in a false nine role remains a flexible alternative. Either way, Galatasaray will look to dominate possession and use their quality out wide to create chances.

Genclerbirligi are likely to set up in a low-to-mid block, either a 4-2-3-1 or a compact 5-4-1 to keep bodies behind the ball. The plan will be to soak up pressure, limit the spaces between the lines, and attack Galatasaray on the break through Koita’s pace and Tongya’s creativity.

The hosts’ main tactical weakness has been their inability to retain the ball for sustained periods, which tends to leave their defenders exposed to second-phase attacks. Against a side with Galatasaray’s technical quality, that could spell trouble if they are forced to chase the game.

On the other hand, Galatasaray have occasionally looked vulnerable to counter-attacks when their full-backs push high, and Singo in particular leaves gaps for opposition wingers to exploit. With Onyekuru out of the picture, though, Genclerbirligi lose one of the few players in their squad with the raw pace to punish that.

Set pieces will also be an area of interest. Genclerbirligi have shipped plenty of goals from dead balls this season, and Galatasaray’s array of aerial threats, with Sanchez, Bardakci and Icardi all a menace in the box, should fancy their chances from corners and free-kicks.

Betting Tips and Predictions

Best Value Betting Tip

Galatasaray to win & over 2.5 goals

Suggested odds: around 1.95

Galatasaray have scored at least three goals in their last five home meetings with Genclerbirligi, and the hosts have failed to keep a clean sheet in their last 10 league matches. The league leaders have bags of attacking quality even without Osimhen in his usual rhythm, and Genclerbirligi’s fragile defence should provide openings.

Alternative picks

  • Leroy Sane to score or assist: around 1.70
  • Galatasaray -1 handicap: around 2.00
  • Both teams to score: around 2.10

The league table itself is doing most of the heavy lifting here. Galatasaray need the points, arrive in better form, have better players in every department, and know Genclerbirligi have not scored in six of their last eight league games.

However, straight match odds on Galatasaray are too short to offer real value, which is why a combined win-and-goals bet is the sharpest play. The reverse fixture produced five goals, and Genclerbirligi’s issues at both ends of the pitch make a low-scoring stalemate extremely unlikely.

Another angle worth considering is a Galatasaray clean sheet, though the recent pattern of Genclerbirligi scoring in the reverse fixture and the Red and Blacks’ desperate need for points would make that a slightly riskier call.

Final Score Prediction

Score Prediction

Genclerbirligi 0 – 3 Galatasaray

Galatasaray’s title pressure, attacking depth and dominant head-to-head record should prove decisive. Genclerbirligi’s goal drought, Onyekuru’s exclusion and a long injury list leave them with very little to fight back with, especially against a wounded champion desperate to respond to their recent slip.

Galatasaray will want to send an emphatic message to Fenerbahce and Trabzonspor by racking up a big win in Ankara. With a possible Osimhen cameo, Icardi leading the line, and Sane and Sallai pulling the strings out wide, the league leaders have the firepower to overwhelm a fragile host side.

Genclerbirligi’s best hope is to keep it tight and grab something on the break, but their recent inability to find the net, the Onyekuru saga and the historic weight of this fixture all point in one direction. Galatasaray should control possession, take the lead before the hour mark, and add a couple more late on as the hosts chase the game.

A 3-0 away win feels like the most probable outcome on the available evidence, and one that keeps Galatasaray’s title defence firmly on track heading into the crucial run-in.
