Super Eagles prospect offered route to Europa League by leaky Hoffenheim

Nigerian defender and Super Eagles prospect Felix Uduokhai has emerged as a potential target for Bundesliga side Hoffenheim.

Hoffenheim's defensive woes are well-documented. The club finished sixth in the Bundesliga in 2023/24 but conceded a staggering 66 goals, the fourth-highest total in the division. With only Nigeria international Kevin Akpoguma and homegrown talent Tim Drexler as reliable options, and Ozan Kabak sidelined for an extended period, the club is desperate to bolster its backline.

Augsburg center-back Uduokhai, with his Bundesliga experience, fits the profile of the player the club is looking for. His strong left foot and versatility are additional assets that could make him a valuable addition to the Hoffenheim squad.

The 26-year-old Super Eagles-eligible defender has proven his mettle in the Bundesliga, amassing over a hundred appearances for Augsburg.

His consistent performances have not gone unnoticed, with Transfermarkt valuing him at €7 million. However, it is expected that he will command a fee closer to €8 million.

European dreams could lure Super Eagles refusenik

Hoffenheim's participation in the Europa League could be a tempting proposition for Uduokhai, offering the opportunity for increased playing time and European experience. The club's defensive woes also suggest a potential pathway to regular first-team football for the center-back.

Felix Uduokhai possesses a unique blend of Nigerian heritage and German upbringing. Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a German mother, Uduokhai has carved out a substantial career in the Bundesliga, amassing over a century of appearances.

He progressed through the German youth ranks, culminating in a senior national team call-up in 2020. Despite this recognition, the versatile defender remains uncapped at the senior level.

Interestingly, Uduokhai's Nigerian roots previously sparked interest from the Super Eagles during Gernot Rohr's tenure as coach. However, the defender opted to focus on his club career in Germany at that time.
