Iheanacho’s future at Celtic hits the rock as Hoops prepare £7m summer recruitment

Super Eagles striker Kelechi Iheanacho might not be a Celtic player next season after struggling for minutes under Martin O’Neill, Afrik Foot reports.

The 29-year-old joined the Hoops as a free agent in September after leaving Sevilla, linking up once again with former Leicester City boss Brendan Rodgers.

Iheanacho made an encouraging start to life at Parkhead, scoring on his debut, but his momentum was halted by a hamstring injury in October.

Since returning to fitness, the 29-year-old has struggled for game time and has made just five league appearances this season.

His situation worsened further after being left on the bench during Celtic’s clash against Motherwell, with manager Martin O’Neill opting to introduce Čvančara instead.

Celtic turn attention away from Iheanacho to Cvancara

The Czech striker, who joined on loan from Borussia Mönchengladbach in January, made a telling impact.

With the game level at 1-1, Čvančara came off the bench to score from the penalty spot and played a key role in Celtic’s late third goal, sealing an important victory as they moved to within two points of Hearts.

As per Football Insider 247, Celtic hold a £7 million option to sign him permanently, and his recent performances have strengthened the case for that deal to be activated.

While Celtic are expected to hold discussions with Iheanacho over a possible contract extension, the signs point towards an exit.

The club reportedly retain the option to extend his deal by another year, but his limited impact, coupled with injury struggles and increased competition for places, has cast doubt over his long-term future.

With a new manager expected to take charge next season, and Čvančara emerging as a preferred attacking option, it appears increasingly likely that Iheanacho could move on from Celtic in the summer.

Iheanacho’s last game for Celtic came in their 1-0 win over VFB Stuttgart in the UEFA Europa League, where he came on for the final 12 minutes of their victory in Germany.
