Iheanacho: Super Eagles star targets return to Europe after breaking scoring duck

Nigeria forward Kelechi Iheanacho expressed his excitement after scoring his first goals for Sevilla in their 3-0 victory over Las Rozas CF in the first round of the Copa del Rey at Estadio Navalcarbón on Wednesday.

Iheanacho has struggled to find his footing at Sevilla since his arrival after completing his contract with Leicester City.

He has struggled to break into the starting line-up, with head coach Francisco Javier Garcia Pimienta preferring to use Isaac Romero as his lone striker.

The 28-year-old was given the chance to shine against Las Rozas and seized it with both hands, scoring a brace on his debut in the Copa del Rey. His man-of-the-match performance was instrumental in helping Pimienta's side advance to the next round.

After his standout performance, Iheanacho reflected on the significance of scoring his first goals for Sevilla.

“I'm very happy to have scored my first goals for this club. It's very good for my confidence and that of the team, which hopefully will finish in the top six,” he said as reported by El Sevillista.

Iheanacho also emphasised the importance of fan support, expressing, “I hope we win. We really want to win at the Sánchez-Pizjuán, and the support of the fans will be important.”

Prior to the match, Iheanacho had gone a month without participating in an official game for the Spanish club and was reportedly linked with a potential exit from the club in January, despite his contract extending until June 30, 2026.

Iheanacho has made five appearances in La Liga, starting three of those matches and averaging 54 minutes of play per game.
