How Ilenikhena move to Schalke, West Ham, Genoa could boost his Super Eagles chances

Super Eagles target George Ilenikhena could be heading back to European football just months after his big-money move to Saudi Arabia, Afrik-Foot reports.

A return to Europe’s top leagues could be possible with Schalke 04, West Ham United and Genoa all showing interest in signing the Nigerian-born striker.

According to Sacha Taovilieri, the three clubs have already made enquiries about the 19-year-old, who currently plays for Al-Ittihad. The Saudi Pro League side is reportedly open to letting him leave on loan, with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

Ilenikhena only joined Al-Ittihad from AS Monaco in February 2026 in a deal worth around €33 million. However, the move has not gone as planned. The teenager struggled for regular playing time during the second half of the 2025/26 campaign and managed just 88 minutes in the Saudi Pro League.

Despite the lack of minutes, the powerful forward has impressed during pre-season. He reminded European clubs of his quality by scoring in Al-Ittihad’s 2-2 friendly draw against Spanish side Málaga, a performance that has reignited interest from clubs across the continent.

Reports also say Ilenikhena wants to return to Europe but will carefully consider his next destination instead of rushing into a decision. Al-Ittihad are also believed to see a temporary move as the best solution while they reshape their attacking options.

Ilenikhena: Why a European move could fast-track his Super Eagles dream

A return to Europe could also have a major impact on Ilenikhena’s international future with Nigeria. The teenage striker is believed to have committed his international future to the Super Eagles after discussions with head coach Eric Chelle, choosing Nigeria over France. Chelle is understood to have followed the youngster’s development closely since his time at Monaco and sees him as an important player for the future.

The Super Eagles coach reportedly plans to introduce Ilenikhena through Nigeria’s Olympic (Under-23) team before gradually promoting him to the senior national side. Playing every week in one of Europe’s top leagues would help him adapt to the high-intensity football Chelle wants his teams to play.

A move to West Ham would expose him to the Premier League, while Schalke would offer the challenge of German football and Genoa could provide valuable Serie A experience. Regular football at any of those clubs would also keep him in full view of Nigeria Football Federation scouts.

Competition for places in the Super Eagles attack remains fierce. Established stars such as Victor Osimhen, Akor Adams and Ademola Lookman already lead Nigeria’s frontline, meaning Ilenikhena must consistently perform at a high level to earn his place.

The good news for the teenager is that there are no nationality obstacles standing in his way. Since he never represented France in an official competitive match, he does not need a FIFA nationality switch. If he rediscovers his scoring form in Europe, he could become available for immediate selection whenever Chelle decides the time is right.
