‘It hurts’ – Super Falcons’ most in-form striker pens heartbreaking response to ridiculous WAFCON exclusion

Published on by

Super Falcons striker Gift Monday has reacted to her stunning absence from the Nigeria squad to the upcoming Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).

The squad list, released on Friday, is 24-strong, with the likes of Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade named in what is being regarded as a star-studded roster.

There is, however, no room for Monday, who has been in stellar form for Washington Spirit since joining, scoring four goals in her first nine matches for the WSL side. This has led to widespread shock within the Nigeria fanbase.

Monday debunks injury rumours, wishes Super Falcons well

With some theorising the striker must be injured, Monday took to social media to correct the perception, declaring herself fit.

The 23-year-old, long regarded as part of the next generation of Super Falcons forwards, has been a fixture in Nigeria squads for the last two major tournaments – the 2023 Women’s World Cup and the 2024 Olympics – albeit as a substitute.

Her statement, however, made clear that, in spite of her disappointment, she will be supporting the nine-time African champions in their bid for a tenth title. Also, she clarified that she is not disillusioned, and will be back in the team whenever called upon.
