Iwobi inspires Fulham league win, raises selection questions for Eguavoen

Alex Iwobi played a pivotal role in Fulham’s 2-0 win over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, demonstrating a balanced mix of creativity and grit.

Iwobi’s influence was most evident in the 83rd minute, as he set up substitute, Harry Wilson with a well-timed pass on a fast break, leading to Fulham’s second goal and sealing the win.

Fulham’s attack looked energized with the Super Eagles star, and his vision and passing range were central to their offensive flow.

Stats and eye test back a solid all-round performance

Iwobi's stats from this match underscore his versatility and control. He recorded 100% success in long balls, created two significant chances, and made one shot on target.

Defensively, he contributed with three tackles, one interception, and won six ground duels, solidifying his influence across the pitch. The midfielder’s success rate in dribbles (2/2) and his consistent pressing made him an asset both defensively and offensively.

Iwobi could have had more than one assist if not for a disallowed goal in the 52nd minute, where a VAR review determined that fellow Hale End Academy graduate Emile Smith Rowe was offside before netting Iwobi’s pass.

The Lagos-born midfielder was booked in the 63rd minute following a foul on Tyrick Mitchell, yet he kept his composure, continuing to drive Fulham’s attack until his substitution in the 89th minute. Calvin Bassey also saw full-game action.

Iwobi's creative role creates headache for Eguavoen

This victory further highlights Iwobi’s impact in the Premier League, where he now has two goals and two assists across 11 matches.

Alex Iwobi has thrived this season as an inside forward, focusing less on shooting and more on creating chances from both flanks. Unlike a traditional winger, he often inverts, finding space centrally to set up teammates.

This adaptation could challenge Super Eagles coach Austin Eguavoen‘s plans, as Iwobi’s creativity might compete with Samuel Chukwueze’s spot, while Ademola Lookman remains crucial on the left.
