‘If I can’t score, I’ll create chances’ – Iwobi fired up for Premier League season

Fulham midfielder Alex Iwobi has said he is feeling “sharp and ready” ahead of the start of the 2024/25 Premier League season, insisting he is keen to add goals and assists to his game.

The Nigeria international joined Fulham from Everton last year and enjoyed a decent debut campaign in West London, as he helped the Cottagers to finish 13th in the Premier League.

Iwobi contributed five goals and two assists in 30 league matches last term and has been in great form in preseason thus far. The 28-year-old scored in Fulham’s victory over Benfica last week, while also setting up both goals as Marco Silva’s side defeated Hoffenheim 2-0 in their final pre-season match on Saturday.

“It’s good that we’re able to get the results and get some minutes in the legs. I’m very tired right now but feeling sharp and ready for the season,” Iwobi told Fulham TV.

“If I can’t score, at least I’m able to create chances for my teammates. We have Smith Rowe and Adama Traore who are going to put them [chances] away. But it’s not just them, we have so many goal threats in the team so it’s nice that everyone is able to get on the score sheet.”

Iwobi’s assists against Hoffenheim were a testament to his creative prowess in advanced areas. The Nigerian found Emile Smith Rowe with a brilliant lob for the first goal before pinging a long ball from the centre of the pitch that set the icing for Adama Traore to double their lead.

With Manchester United up next for Fulham in the Premier League, Iwobi is confident of another upset at Old Trafford after scoring in the Cottagers’ famous win over the Reds last season.

“Yeah, of course, it is a great test. Man United, one of the best teams in the Premier League. It is a good challenge for us away. I mean we were able to do it last season. Hopefully, we can do it again this season and start the season strong,” he stated.

Iwobi looks set to play predominantly on the right wing in the upcoming season, having been deployed there throughout Fulham’s pre-season matches.
