Kelechi Iheanacho homeless no more, reunites with former Leicester boss after Sevilla exit

Super Eagles forward Kelechi Iheanacho has completed a move to Scottish Premiership champions Celtic on a one-year deal, with an option to extend for another season.

The 28-year-old forward, who turns 29 in October, was one of the major talking points on transfer deadline day. His Sevilla stint came to an abrupt end after the Spanish club announced they had agreed to terminate his contract by mutual consent. That development left the former Manchester City striker without a club but crucially free to sign outside the transfer window.

Celtic have now swooped to snap him up, reuniting Iheanacho with Brendan Rodgers, his former manager at Leicester City.

Kelechi Iheanacho: How many Nigerian have played for Celtic?

Iheanacho’s switch makes him the third Super Eagles player to wear the famous green-and-white hoops of Celtic.

Efe Ambrose enjoyed a successful spell at the club, winning league titles and featuring in the Champions League, while Ibrahim Rabiu also had a short stint with the Scottish giants.

The new arrival will be hoping to leave his own mark in Glasgow.

Before choosing Celtic, the 2013 U-17 FIFA World Cup winner had been linked with a variety of clubs, including Turkish sides Besiktas and Samsunspor, Mexican outfit Pumas UNAM, and even newly-promoted La Liga side Real Oviedo. None of those potential moves materialised, leaving the door open for Celtic to act decisively.

The striker brings with him vast experience, having featured for Manchester City, Leicester City, Sevilla, and most recently Middlesbrough. He has over 40 international caps and was part of Nigeria’s squad at the last Africa Cup of Nations.

Celtic will be banking on Iheanacho’s goals and know-how to help them retain their Premiership crown and make an impact in Europe.
