Kelechi Iheanacho left Nigeria for Manchester City’s academy in January 2015, arriving as one of the most hyped teenage strikers on the continent.
At that point, he had been twice named Africa’s Most Promising Talent (2013 and 2016) and was part of the Nigeria Golden Eaglets side that won the 2013 U17 World Cup.
Pep Guardiola inherited a finisher who scored in an FA Youth Cup final and a Premier League International Cup final before he had even made his senior bow.
Eleven years on, the forward is on the TFF 1. Lig’s radar for an entirely different reason: a Turkish-football scoring record.
In between, his path has run through two Premier League giants, a Spanish institution, an English Championship loan, and the reigning Scottish champions – a career that has rarely stood still, but has almost always ended in silverware.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s transfer record
Kelechi Iheanacho has never engineered a move for a fee since leaving Manchester City, every switch since 2017 has been a free transfer or a loan. The one blockbuster deal of his career remains the one that made him, for a period, the most expensive Nigerian footballer in history.
That £25m fee displaced Odion Ighalo’s £20m move to Changchun Yatai as the biggest transfer involving a Nigerian player, a record Iheanacho held until Alex Iwobi, Ademola Lookman and Victor Osimhen’s moves later eclipsed it.
Kelechi Iheanacho’s Manchester City breakthrough
Iheanacho’s senior breakthrough came on 12 September 2015, his second City appearance, when he replaced the injured Sergio Agüero and scored a 90th-minute winner at Crystal Palace. That goal preserved City’s 100% start to the season and their run toward 11 straight league wins. The goal also made the 18-year-old an instant fixture in Guardiola’s forward pool.
His signature moment arrived on 30 January 2016: a hat-trick in a 4-0 FA Cup win over Aston Villa, opening the scoring from a goal-line scramble, converting a penalty, then finishing a one-on-one before setting up Raheem Sterling.
In 2016/17 he scored and assisted in the Manchester derby and netted his first Champions League goal in a 4-0 win over Borussia Mönchengladbach. He was shortlisted for the 2016 FIFA Golden Boy award, eventually won by Renato Sanches.

Kelechi Iheanacho’s Leicester City legacy
The £25m price tag made Iheanacho an instant focal point at the King Power, and his peak Leicester campaign, 2020/21, delivered on it.
The Super Eagles forward netted 19 goals across all competitions, including a personal-best 12 in the Premier League, and a strike against Crystal Palace that won the club’s Goal of the Season.
That year also brought his first Leicester hat-trick, in a 5-0 rout of Sheffield United, and the club’s first-ever FA Cup, with Iheanacho among the scorers through the run.
His most-replayed Leicester goal came on 7 August 2021: a last-gasp penalty against his former club Manchester City to win the FA Community Shield 1-0 at Wembley. He went on to represent Nigeria at the 2021 AFCON and the 2018 World Cup during his Leicester years, and was still at the club for its 2023/24 Championship title and promotion back to the Premier League before leaving as a free agent that summer.
Leicester City:
Appearances – 232
Goals – 61, Assists – 36
Titles – 3
Goals in best season – 19
Honours – FA Cup (2020/21), FA Community Shield (2021/22), EFL Championship (2023/24)

Kelechi Iheanacho’s time at Sevilla & Middlesbrough
Iheanacho joined Sevilla as a free agent in August 2024, Víctor Orta’s replacement option after Youssef En-Nesyri’s exit to Fenerbahçe, reuniting him with countryman Chidera Ejuke.
Coach Garcia Pimienta praised his all-round game but game time was limited across his first half-season: 11 appearances and 3 goals before the club loaned him out.
The move to Middlesbrough in February 2025 was designed to restore rhythm in the Championship; he returned 1 goal and 2 assists from 15 appearances before going back to Sevilla for pre-season.
Once there, he fell outside Matias Almeyda’s plans, and Sevilla placed a reported €3m valuation on him, representing pure profit on a player they had signed for nothing, with Turkish interest (including Besiktaş) already circling before his eventual free move to Celtic.
Sevilla:
Appearances – 11
Goals – 3
Middlesbrough:
Appearances – 15
Goals – 1, Assists – 2
Kelechi Iheanacho’s brilliant Celtic spell
Signed as a free agent in September 2025 to beat Celtic’s Europa League squad-registration deadline, Iheanacho enjoyed and unforgettable time in Glasgow.
His Scottish spell was interrupted twice by injury – hurt within three minutes of coming on against Sturm Graz, then again in the League Cup final – yet he still delivered.
Iheanacho scored in Celtic’s 3-1 Scottish Cup final win over Dunfermline Athletic and contributed five goals from only four league starts in 13 Premiership appearances, a productive rotation and impact-sub return.
Celtic needed a last-gasp win over Hearts on the final day to seal the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership, completing a domestic double in Iheanacho’s only full season at the club. It was the most decorated single campaign of his career outside of his original Manchester City and Leicester trophy hauls combined.
Celtic:
Appearances – 24
Goals – 9, Assist – 1
Titles – 2
Honours – Scottish Premiership and Scottish Cup (both 2025/26)

Kelechi Iheanacho’s Bursaspor rebirth
Free of Celtic and the chase for a bigger move, Iheanacho joined Bursaspor on a free transfer in July 2026, and has not stopped scoring since.
He found the net in every single opening league fixture of the TFF 1. Lig season, and on 15 October 2026 a brace in a 3-0 win over Muğlaspor stretched his run to ten consecutive league matches with a goal, the longest such streak in Turkish top-and-second-tier football history.
The run has already produced 14 goals and 3 assists in 10 league appearances, a scoring rate that would have been extraordinary even in a single standout season, let alone a season still in its second month.
Bursaspor:
Appearances – 10
Goals – 14, Assists – 3
Assists – 3
Straight-scoring games – 10
It caps a career that began with a 90th-minute supersub winner for Manchester City and has now turned a free-transfer rebuild project in Turkey’s second tier into the most statistically dominant stretch of Iheanacho’s career.
