Lecce abandon Philip Otele chase – What it means for Super Eagles hopeful Divine Onyemachi

Lecce’s pursuit of Super Eagles winger Philip Otele appears to have reached a turning point after the Italian club struggled to reach an agreement with Swiss side FC Basel, Afrik-Foot reports.

While Otele may be left frustrated, it is a decision that could open the door for teenage Nigerian winger Divine Onyemachi to earn a bigger role in Serie A this season.

The Serie A side had identified Otele as a key attacking target this summer after his impressive loan spell at Hamburger SV. The 27-year-old became the first Nigerian player to score in the Bundesliga for the German club before returning to Basel.

Talks, however, became difficult because Basel wanted a permanent transfer worth between €5 million and €7 million, while Lecce preferred a loan deal with an option to buy. The gap in valuation has slowed negotiations and encouraged other clubs to make their move.

English Championship clubs Derby County and Birmingham City have both shown interest, while Serie B side Frosinone and several Saudi Pro League clubs are also in the race for the Nigerian winger.

Lecce must now decide whether to continue negotiations with Basel or trust one of their own rising talents.

Onyemachi could become Lecce’s surprise solution

Instead of paying millions for Otele, Lecce could hand a first-team opportunity to 19-year-old Nigerian winger Divine Onyemachi, according to fresh reports from Italy.

The youngster joined the Italian club from West Bromwich Albion and spent last season developing in the Campionato Primavera 1, Italy’s top Under-20 competition. Club coaches were encouraged by his progress, leading to appearances during Lecce’s pre-season programme, including a match against NK Istra in July.

Onyemachi offers many of the qualities Lecce wanted in Otele. He is quick, attacks defenders directly and is comfortable playing on either wing. His pace allows him to carry the ball over long distances, while his movement into the penalty area makes him another attacking option when crosses come in.

Promoting Onyemachi would also fit Lecce’s long-term recruitment strategy. The teenager remains under contract until June 2030, giving the club an opportunity to develop a valuable asset instead of spending heavily in the transfer market.

Serie A breakthrough could speed up Super Eagles dream

A successful first season with Lecce’s senior team could also move Onyemachi much closer to a first Super Eagles call-up.

The winger has already committed his international future to Nigeria despite being eligible to represent England and The Gambia. Previous strong performances have already earned him a place with the Flying Eagles.

Nigeria’s senior team has relied heavily on Ademola Lookman and Moses Simon on the left wing, but there is still room for another explosive wide player with similar qualities. Onyemachi’s ability to attack defenders from both inside and outside could make him an attractive option if he proves himself in Serie A.

History also offers encouragement. Players such as Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze used strong displays at youth level before earning rapid promotions into the senior national team.

Regular appearances in one of Europe’s top five leagues would place Onyemachi firmly in the thoughts of Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle and his technical staff. If Lecce decide that promoting the teenager is better value than signing Otele, the transfer twist could become the biggest opportunity of Onyemachi’s young career.
