Lookman: Super Eagles and Atletico star warns Barcelona ahead of three battles in 10 days

Super Eagles forward Ademola Lookman has warned that Atletico Madrid will be ready for the challenge ahead of a trilogy of battles against Barcelona in the coming days, Afrik-Foot reports.

Lookman has quickly become the man to watch at Atletico Madrid, and now the Nigerian forward finds himself at the heart of a demanding and defining run of fixtures against Barcelona.

Atletico will face Barcelona three times across 10 days in April, with major implications in both domestic and European competitions. It begins on April 4 in La Liga at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, where Barcelona currently lead the table by four points.

It is a chance for the visitors to strengthen their grip on the title race. For Atletico, sitting fourth, it is equally crucial as they chase a place in next season’s Champions League.

Attention then shifts to Europe on April 8, when the sides meet again in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Spotify Camp Nou. Barcelona have been formidable at home this season, winning all 14 of their matches there, and will hope to build a strong advantage before the return leg.

That decisive second leg arrives on April 14 back in Madrid, where Atletico will aim to overturn or protect whatever result emerges in Catalonia. It is a tie loaded with history and tension, especially after Atletico edged past Barcelona 4-3 on aggregate in their recent Copa del Rey semi-final meeting.

Tactically, the fixtures promise a fascinating contrast between Hansi Flick’s high-pressing Barcelona and Diego Simeone’s disciplined, counter-attacking Atletico.

Lookman ready for ‘special’ challenge

Standing at the centre of it all is Lookman, who has made a fast and powerful impression since joining the club permanently in the winter window. In his first six matches, he scored four goals and provided two assists, immediately writing his name into the story of Atletico’s season.

It’s a special game against another tough opponent,” Lookman said, speaking to a roundtable of journalists arranged by LALIGA, as per Forbes.

We need to be ready for that and prepare in the right way. The next game is at the weekend, and we take every match as it comes, game by game.”

Lookman’s impact in Madrid has been instant. The former Atalanta forward became the first Atletico player to score in the Champions League, La Liga, and Copa del Rey within his first six appearances.

Since then, he has added two league goals, while contributing two goals and two assists in just three Copa del Rey matches, helping Atletico reach the final for the first time since 2013. In Europe, he has also chipped in with a goal and an assist.

Yet it is not just the statistics that stand out, but the timing and quality of his performances. In the Copa del Rey semi-final first leg against Barcelona, Lookman delivered a stunning first-half display. He scored in the 33rd minute to make it 3-0, finishing off a flowing move, before turning provider for Julián Álvarez just before half-time to put Atletico 4-0 ahead.

That performance, arguably his best so far, helped Atletico seize control of the tie. Even when Barcelona responded strongly in the second leg at Camp Nou, Atletico held firm to progress.

“We won 4-0 at home and the result of the away match was that, and we’re through to the final, so there’s a lot to take away from both games, home and away,” he reflected.

“We’ve obviously learned from that and we’re still learning from that. Every occasion you can expect something unexpected, that’s the game.”

Those lessons now feed directly into the upcoming trilogy. Both teams know each other well after their recent meetings, and that familiarity could make the contests even tighter.

A defining month awaits Lookman and Atletico as they have already booked a date with Real Sociedad in the Copa del Rey final a place in the Champions League semi-finals, potentially against Arsenal or Sporting CP, hangs in the balance.
