Lookman hits 50: Where does Atalanta talisman rank among Nigerian scorers in Serie A?

Ademola Lookman would undoubtedly be delighted with Atalanta's emphatic victory over Juventus over the weekend. Beyond securing maximum points for his team, the Super Eagles forward also achieved a significant personal milestone.

Lookman scored a goal in La Dea's 4-0 thumping of the Serie A giants, taking his goal tally for the Italian outfit across all competitions to 50 in 109 appearances, including 37 in the Serie A.

The 27-year-old has enjoyed a hugely successful career, highlighted by a hat-trick in the UEFA Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen securing the club's first ever European trophy.

This was a performance full of confidence, a trait Lookman has never really lacked in his career. This 2024/25 season, however, has seen the Nigeria international hit heights of performance never before seen.

Already, his 18 in 31 matches in this campaign has eclipsed his previous best tally (17 in 45 matches last season) in 14 fewer matches. His exploits in 2023/24 saw him named CAF Player of the Year and place in 14th in the Ballon d'Or voting.

Is Ademola Lookman Nigeria's highest Serie A goalscorer in history?

Lookman's 37 Serie A goals positions him as the second-highest Nigerian in the league's history, trailing compatriot Victor Osimhen.

Osimhen, who joined Napoli from Lille in July 2020, amassed 65 Serie A goals in 108 appearances before his loan move to Galatasaray in September 2024. To surpass Osimhen's record, Lookman would need to score an additional 29 goals to achieve this.
