Lookman: Simeone challenges Super Eagles star despite first La Liga goal for Atletico

Diego Simeone has praised Ademola Lookman for his impressive start at Atlético Madrid but insists the Nigerian winger still has areas of his game to improve, Afrik-Foot reports.

Lookman scored his first goal in La Liga during Atletico Madrid’s 4-2 victory over RCD Espanyol on Saturday.

The strike continued a brilliant run for the Super Eagles forward, who has now registered four goals and two assists in six appearances since arriving from Atalanta BC in the January transfer window.

Speaking after the match, Simeone welcomed Lookman’s attacking contribution but made it clear that the player must grow into the team’s full tactical system.

Above all, he contributes goals. In principle, more goals than playmaking. He can improve both his overall play and his defensive work; we need him to adapt to the team’s style of play, and I see him eager and keen to improve,” Simeone said.

Since he arrived, he’s said he wants to improve as a footballer. His goal-scoring instinct isn’t a coincidence, and we need more of him in terms of overall play,” the tactician added.

The goal also placed Lookman alongside club legend Luis Suárez, matching the best scoring start by an Atletico player since the 2013-14 season, according to Opta statistics.

Lookman and Atletico shift focus to Champions League

Attention now turns to the UEFA Champions League as Atletico Madrid prepare to host Club Brugge KV in the decisive second leg of their knockout phase play-off.

The first meeting between both sides ended in an entertaining 3-3 draw, with Lookman on target while fellow Nigerian midfielder Raphael Onyedika contributed a goal and an assist for the Belgian side.

Simeone believes the atmosphere at the stadium will play a key role as his team aim to reach the round of 16.

We need to focus our message internally to energize our people. And based on our style of play and energy, I have no doubt that our stadium will be behind us.”

Lookman’s fast adaptation to Spanish football has quickly made him one of Atletico’s most dangerous attacking players. His pace, direct running and finishing have added a new dimension to Simeone’s attack, even as the coach continues to demand greater defensive discipline and involvement in build-up play.

With confidence high after their league victory, Atletico Madrid will now hope their in-form Nigerian forward can deliver again on the European stage as they chase progression in the Champions League.
