Manchester United transfers: Why EPL club are interested in Wilfred Ndidi – three key reasons

Published on by

Premier League heavyweights Manchester United have revived their interest in Super Eagles captain Wilfred Ndidi ahead of next season, Afrik-Foot reports.

The Nigerian midfielder has become the subject of intense transfer speculation which has cast doubt over his long-term future at Besiktas despite only joining the Turkish club last summer.

Manchester United were also interested in signing Ndidi before his move to Turkey. The former Leicester City midfielder was keen to leave the Foxes at the time, but the Red Devils failed to follow through with a serious approach, paving the way for his switch to Besiktas.

Although Ndidi enjoyed an impressive individual campaign, Besiktas endured another disappointing season, finishing fourth in the Turkish Super Lig without winning a trophy. The club have since made changes in the dugout, appointing Vincenzo Italiano as head coach to replace Sergen Yalcin.

Fresh reports now suggest Manchester United are considering a move for the 29-year-old as they look to strengthen their midfield ahead of their return to Champions League football next season. With Michael Carrick’s side eager to compete for major honours again, Ndidi has emerged as an attractive option for several reasons.

Suitable replacement for Casemiro

One of the biggest reasons behind Manchester United’s renewed interest in Ndidi is the need to replace Brazilian midfielder Casemiro, who left the club after the expiration of his contract.

The experienced midfielder had been a key figure in United’s engine room over the past four years and his departure has created a significant gap in midfield.

United are now looking for a player capable of bringing defensive solidity, energy and a relentless work rate, which makes Ndidi a very appealing option.

The three-time European champions have already explored moves for several midfielders but have missed out on a number of key targets in recent weeks. England international Elliott Anderson has completed a move to rivals Manchester City, while Sandro Tonali and Mateus Fernandes have both joined Tottenham Hotspur in big-money deals.

With those options no longer available, Ndidi’s availability and willingness to leave Besiktas have made him a top target.

Premier League experience

Another major factor working in Ndidi’s favour is his wealth of Premier League experience. The Super Eagles captain made 220 Premier League appearances during his time at Leicester City, establishing himself as one of the league’s most reliable defensive midfielders.

His familiarity with the demands of English football means he would require little time to adapt if he returns to the Premier League.

That experience could prove invaluable for Manchester United, especially as they prepare to compete domestically and in Europe. Beyond his performances on the pitch, Ndidi’s leadership qualities could also make him an important figure in the dressing room.

Affordable option for Manchester United

Ndidi is also very affordable compared to other midfield targets such as Elliott Anderson, Aurelien Tchouameni and Carlos Baleba, which is another reason for Manchester United’s interest in his services ahead of next season.

Besiktas are willing to listen to offers in the region of €8 million, which should be within the reach of the Premier League heavyweights.

Ndidi would also fancy a return to the Premier League, where he would once again have the opportunity to compete at the highest level and play Champions League football.

However, Manchester United may have to act quickly, as interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia as well as Hull City could complicate negotiations.

If the Red Devils can fend off rival interest and agree a deal with Besiktas, Ndidi could be on his way to Old Trafford before the start of next season.
