The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has stepped up security measures ahead of MC Alger vs Rangers’ crucial Champions League preliminary-round second-leg clash Friday.
The Flying Antelopes travel to Algeria on Friday, October 23, carrying a 2-0 advantage from the first leg in Abeokuta. However, tensions surrounding the fixture have prompted CAF to take additional precautions ahead of the meeting at Stade Ali Ammar dit Ali la Pointe in Algiers.
Recall that after the game, Enugu Rangers alleged that the visiting fans destroyed some stadium infrastructure and bypassed the gate of the MKO Abiola Stadium to gain entrance into the stadium.

The Flying Antelopes have since petitioned CAF over the issue, while releasing a statement. They also shared a statement to that effect, one which the Algerian club later countered.
These issues have set up what is expected to be a heated second leg. The game will be played in Algiers, and will be brimming with fans. And given the way the first leg went, Alger fans, players, and probably coaching staff will deploy different antics to put Enugu Rangers off.
CAF names experienced officials for MC Alger vs Rangers
Ahead of the fixture, the Confederation of African Football have appointed Ugandan security expert Dixon Adol Okello to oversee arrangements for the encounter.

CAF has also appointed an experienced team of match officials for the second leg, with Lesotho’s David Molise named as the centre referee, assisted by fellow countrymen Phatsoane Souru and Siza Shaun Dlangamandla Siza. Sephabathi Adam, also from Lesotho, has been named the fourth official.
Egyptian official Hisham Salaheldin Mostafa will serve as match commissioner, while Togo’s Kokou Ognankotan Ntale has been appointed referee assessor.
Although CAF has not publicly detailed every additional security measure planned for the match, the inclusion of a dedicated security officer raises eyebrows, as that is unusual.
🚨 CAF is taking no chances ahead of the high-risk second-leg clash between MC Alger and Rangers International in the second preliminary round of the CAF Champions League. CAF has appointed highly experienced officials for the encounter, with Ugandan security expert Dixon Okello assigned to oversee security matters. Safety and Security Officers and General Coordinators are not routinely deployed for preliminary-round matches. However, the tension surrounding this fixture has prompted CAF to take additional precautions. Following the incidents in the first leg, CAF is clearly treating this match with the utmost seriousness. #CAFCLwithMicky #AfricanFootball

However, it is not far-fetched because the controversy from the first leg has added another layer of pressure to a tie that was already supposed to be difficult from the onset.
In terms of stadium security, Okello is one of the top names in Africa, as he has been in charge of some of the biggest games on the continent, at the Africa Cup of Nations and CAF’s competitions. He also worked at the under-20 FIFA World Cup in 2023.
MC Alger need to overcome a two-goal deficit at home, while Rangers will be desperate to secure their place in the Champions League group stage. With the bad blood and tension from the first leg added to it, fans can definitely expect a real battle.
Rangers face the test of their lives

Despite their advantage, Rangers cannot afford to approach the return leg as a formality. Their first-leg victory gave them a cushion, but MC Alger will have home advantage and with the quality and experience that they possess, the two-goal lead could be destroyed in the blink of an eye.
While Fidelis Ilechukwu and his boys target defensive solidity, they should also have their sights on scoring, as that would make things more difficult for MC Alger, due to the away goal rule.
The environment will definitely be hostile for the reigning NPFL champions. They just have to dig deep and play their game.
