Official: Super Eagles hopeful Azeez wins Championship Player of the Month award

Millwall winger Femi Azeez has been rewarded for his outstanding recent performances after winning the EFL Sky Bet Championship Player of the Month award for February 2026, Afrik-Foot reports.

The 24-year-old attacker enjoyed a brilliant month for the London club, playing a key role in a strong run of results that saw Millwall win four of their five league games. During that period, Azeez produced five goal contributions, scoring once and providing four assists, as the team climbed the table.

One of the standout moments of his month came in Millwall’s impressive 3-0 victory over Birmingham City at The Den, when he opened the scoring with a superb volley that has already been mentioned as a potential Goal of the Season contender.

Azeez beat strong competition to claim the award, with Southampton midfielder Leo Scienza, Sheffield United’s Sydie Peck, and Coventry striker Haji Wright also nominated.

Reacting to the recognition, the winger was quick to share the credit with his teammates.

“I’m absolutely delighted to win this award,” Femi told millwallfc.co.uk. “It’s a special moment for me – I have to thank my team mates as well; it’s been a good month. We just need to keep going now!”

Millwall head coach Alex Neil also praised the winger’s impact on the team this season.

It’s well deserved. He has been our talisman this year and every time he has been on form, we have definitely carried an extra threat at the top end of the pitch. I think this month, with the number of points we have accumulated and the run we have been on, he has been the catalyst for that.”

Femi Azeez: From non-league football to a potential Super Eagles call-up

Azeez’s rise in English football has been anything but straightforward.

Born in Westminster, England, the winger began his youth career at Watford, joining the club at the age of nine. However, his early journey suffered a setback when he was released at just 14 years old.

Instead of giving up, he rebuilt his career through England’s lower leagues. He joined Northwood, where he made his senior debut at the age of 16.

His rapid progress at the club impressed manager Gordon Boateng, who said at the time: “He took his opportunity with both hands, he came off the bench and played well, so I gave him a start and he just continued to grow. He started the last six games of the season, which is virtually unheard of for a 16-year-old at that level. It doesn’t happen.”

After spells with Wealdstone and a productive loan at Hanwell Town, Azeez earned a move to Reading in 2019. He gradually worked his way into the first team and eventually became an important figure during the 2023–24 season, making 52 appearances and scoring eight goals as Reading fought to stay in League One.

His progress caught the attention of Millwall, who signed him permanently in August 2024. Since then, the winger has continued to grow, scoring important goals and becoming a regular presence on the right flank.

Azeez primarily plays as a right winger, where his pace, dribbling, and creativity have made him a constant attacking threat. His style could make him a natural competitor for Samuel Chukwueze in the Super Eagles setup.

Nigeria’s national team coach Eric Chelle is reportedly monitoring the player closely. With Chelle expected to announce his squad for an upcoming friendly against Jordan, Azeez’s recent form, capped by this Championship Player of the Month award, may strengthen his chances of earning a first international call-up.
