MLS Team of the Week: Super Eagles star gets nod after decisive goal for NE Revolution

Super Eagles midfielder Alhassan Yusuf has been named in the Major League Soccer Team of the Matchday for Week 7 after delivering a match-winning performance for New England Revolution, Afrik-Foot reports.

Yusuf scored the only goal in a narrow 1-0 win over D.C. United, helping his side maintain their perfect home record this season. The victory also came with a second straight clean sheet to signal the Revolution’s growing confidence at both ends of the pitch.

His display earned him a place in the league’s best XI for the round, where he was joined by standout performers from across MLS, including attacking players like Brian White and Rafael Navarro, as well as experienced defenders such as Maya Yoshida.

After the match, assistant coach Michael Morris was full of praise for the Nigerian’s influence.

“Yusuf was amazing today in my opinion,” Morris said. “Yusuf is a fantastic guy, and every single moment that I’ve been able to work with him, I’ve come to appreciate him that much more day in and day out.

“He has definitely put himself in a position where he’s very integral to what we want to do in terms of in possession, out of possession, and in the multiple positions that he’s been able to adapt to and play in so far.”

Yusuf’s goal came in the 35th minute, finishing off a move created by Dor Turgeman and Will Sands. It proved enough to secure all three points and continue the club’s strong start at home.

Yusuf: The Super Eagles star driving Revolution’s strong start

The goal also highlights a shift in Yusuf’s role this season. Previously known for his defensive discipline, the midfielder is now contributing more in attack and the Super Eagles star believes it is no surprise.

“I was in kind of a more defensive role before. But then, of course, the role that I’m playing now, I have to be in the box and then finish the attack. So yeah, I’m not surprised by the goals that I’ve scored,” he explained.

Yusuf now shares the lead for goals at the club with teammates Peyton Miller and Brayan Ceballos, each with two goals. It is an early sign of how much his game has evolved since joining the Revolution in 2024.

Under head coach Marko Mitrović, the midfielder appears to have found a new attacking edge. Having scored twice already this season, he has matched his total from the entire previous campaign in just a handful of matches.

The Revolution as a team are also benefiting from this attacking improvement. With 12 goals so far, they are among the league’s more dangerous sides going forward. That added threat, combined with defensive solidity, is helping them build momentum early in the campaign.

Attention now turns to a busy run of fixtures. The team are set to face Rhode Island FC in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, as they look to carry their league form into knockout competition.
