Moses Simon shines but Nantes suffer setback in costly defeat to Angers

Moses Simon featured prominently for Nantes but couldn’t prevent a damaging 1-0 home defeat to Angers on Sunday, as substitute Jim Allevinah’s 52nd-minute strike at the Stade de la Beaujoire deepened the Canaries’ relegation worries with just two games left to play.

Going into the match, Antoine Kombouaré’s side, sitting 14th on the Ligue 1 table and just two points above their Sunday opponents, were tipped to capitalise on home advantage to secure a vital win and edge closer to safety.

However, they squandered that opportunity and will now have to wait at least another week to secure their top-flight status.

With the defeat, Simon’s Nantes have slipped to 15th place on the Ligue 1 table with 32 points from 32 matches — just four points clear of 16th-placed Le Havre, who occupy the final relegation spot. That gap could narrow to a single point if Le Havre win their game later on Sunday.

Simon hits woodwork in frustrating outing as Nantes fall at home

Despite his best efforts, Moses Simon endured a frustrating evening as Nantes slipped to a 1–0 home defeat against Angers at the Stade de la Beaujoire on Sunday.

The Super Eagles winger came close to scoring when he struck the woodwork — the closest Nantes came to finding the net in a game they were expected to win.

Simon was heavily involved, completing three of seven dribble attempts and delivering one key pass, but his final ball let him down with just three of 15 crosses reaching a teammate.

He made 18 accurate passes from 24 attempts (75%) and fought hard in duels, winning seven of 13 on the ground and both of his aerial battles.

However, with no shots on target and minimal attacking threat, the 28-year-old was unable to inspire his side to the result they needed, leaving Nantes just above the relegation zone with three games left.
