Super Eagles winger Moses Simon scored his first goal of the season as Nantes secured a 2-0 victory over Auxerre in the French Ligue 1 on Sunday.
Simon, who just came back from a season ending injury he sustained in an international friendly against Mali in March, has shaken that off to start the new season on a high.
After months of rehabilitation, the 29-year-old has re-established himself as a key player for Antoine Kombouaré’s side.
Starting against Auxerre, Simon continued to show his value, having also started in last weekend’s goalless draw against Toulouse, where he played for 75 minutes.
Nantes go ahead through Moses Simon
Nantes took the lead in the 14th minute when Spanish midfielder Pedro Chirivella provided an assist for Simon, who expertly found the back of the net with a clinical finish.
Throughout the first half, Simon was a constant threat, showcasing his agility and skill on the ball. Despite their efforts, Nantes couldn’t extend their lead.
Auxerre's situation worsened when Japanese striker Ado Onaiwu, who has Nigerian heritage, was sent off in the 53rd minute, leaving the visitors to play with 10 men.
Moses Simon performance statistics
Simon’s performance was notable; he had 42 touches, created two chances, and registered two shots on target. He completed 16 of 22 passes and successfully executed three out of four long-range passes.
His dynamic play earned him a standing ovation from the fans at the Stade de la Beaujoire when he was substituted in the 78th minute.
In the final moments of the game, Bahereba Guirassy scored a second goal for Nantes, securing their first win of the season.
Super Eagles prospect Gabriel Osho started in defence for Auxerre, who recently earned promotion to Ligue 1.
Simon’s return and performance are a boost for both Nigerian and Nantes fans, as he is also expected to be back for the Super Eagles Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers next month.
