Moses Simon’s fifth assist falls short as Nantes suffer heavy Ligue 1 defeat

Super Eagles forward Moses Simon added to his assist tally in Ligue 1 on Sunday, but it wasn’t enough to save Nantes from a 4-1 defeat away to Brest.

Simon, who was the hero last weekend with the winning goal against Rennes, turned provider this time to register his fifth assist of the season.

Nantes endured a tough outing at the Stade Francis-Le Blé, as the hosts took control early in the match.

Brest broke the deadlock in the 24th minute through Kamory Doumbia before Brendan Chardonnet doubled their advantage just three minutes later, leaving Nantes with an uphill battle.

The Canaries showed signs of life shortly after the break. In the 48th minute, Simon delivered a precise pass to Douglas Augusto, who finished confidently to make it 2-1 and give the visitors a glimmer of hope.

However, Brest extinguished any chances of a comeback late in the game. Abdallah Sima struck in the 88th minute to restore the two-goal cushion, and then Sima got his second in added time, sealing all three points for the home side.

Simon was heavily involved in Nantes’ build-up play, recording 47 touches and making five key passes.

He completed 18 of his 23 attempted passes, achieving a 78% success rate. Despite his creativity, Simon managed to create just one clear-cut scoring opportunity for his team.

In duels, the Nigerian international had mixed success, winning four of his eight ground duels but losing the only aerial challenge he faced.

While his individual contributions were noteworthy, they couldn’t prevent a tough loss for Nantes.
