Super Eagles midfielder Wilfred Ndidi has affirmed that the No.6 role his natural and most effective position, despite his ability to adapt to different roles for the benefit of the team.
Under former Leicester City manager Enzo Maresca, the 28-year-old transitioned from a traditional defensive midfielder (no.6) to a more versatile and dynamic box-to-box midfielder (No.8). His adaptability proved crucial in the Foxes' successful promotion to the Premier League for the 2024/25 season.
This trend has persisted under Maresca’s successor, Steve Cooper, and the club’s current manager, Ruud van Nistelrooy.

With a focus on teamwork and versatility due to his ability to play as a defensive midfielder and as an attacking midfielder, Ndidi stressed his willingness to support the squad in whatever way necessary.
Ndidi reflects on versatility and thriving in his preferred role
In a recent interview with SuperSport, Ndidi discussed his versatility on the pitch while reaffirming his preference for the No.6 role.
The former KRC Genk man, who has adapted to various positions over the years, credited his experience in defensive midfield for his recent resurgence.

“During the start of the season, I was playing a different position and just tried my best to help the team.
“My natural position is the No.6, but because of the qualities in the team and the manager wanted me here or there… Wherever he wants me, I'm always present. This is the kind of person I am,” Ndidi said.
“For me, I feel the team comes first, it's not a one-man sport. That's why I try to adapt in every position that I play. But now the new manager came in and put me in the No.6, and because I've got a lot of experience in that position, it's made it look like I've stepped up.”
