Newcastle United star on NFF radar over possible international switch

The Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) have taken a bold step as they aim to strengthen the Super Eagles after recent disappointments, Afrik-Foot reports.

According to recent reports, Newcastle United forward William Osula has been approached by the NFF over a potential international switch.

The move comes as Nigeria plan a major rebuild ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers and long-term preparations for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, after missing out on consecutive editions of the tournament, leading to nationwide criticism of the football federation.

In addition, the Super Eagles have finished second and third in their last two African Cup of Nations campaigns, with a fourth title proving elusive since their last triumph in South Africa in the 2013 edition.

FIFA recently approved Arthur Okonkwo’s switch to Nigeria and attention will now turned to Osula, who could become the next major addition to the squad.

Who is the Newcastle United star on Super Eagles radar?

William Osula was born in Denmark to a Danish mother and a Nigerian-French father. He grew up in England, making him eligible to represent Denmark, Nigeria, France, as well as England at senior international level.

The 22-year-old has featured for Denmark at both U19 and U21 levels and received his first senior call-up in November. However, he was forced to withdraw due to injury and was replaced by Yussuf Poulsen.

Nigeria’s hopes initially suffered a major blow when Osula was named in Denmark’s squad for their World Cup playoff matches last month. However, he remained an unused substitute in both games as Denmark failed in their qualification bid, leaving the door open a second chance.

At club level, Osula joined Newcastle United in 2024 and while his playing time was initially limited, he has grown into a more regular figure under manager Eddie Howe this season. The 22-year-old has made 30 appearances across all competitions, scoring six goals, including a stunning winner in a 2-1 victory over Manchester United in March.

Osula at international career crossroads after NFF approach

It initially appeared that William Osula was set on representing Denmark, having progressed through their youth teams and even after receiving his maiden senior call-ups.

However, he is yet to make his senior debut and Nigeria’s interest may have given him something to reconsider, especially considering the Super Eagles attacking style of play their under head coach Eric Chelle.

Denmark’s failure to qualify for the World Cup could also work in Nigeria’s favour as they attempt to convince the Newcastle United forward to switch allegiance in the coming weeks.

That said, Nigeria currently boast a very strong attacking lineup that includes the likes of Victor Osimhen, Ademola Lookman and Samuel Chukwueze and breaking into the team may prove challenging for now.

Still, Osula could still be interested in making a switch, especially given that most of the Super Eagles’ attackers are almost beyond their prime. The decision, though, rests with the player as he decides what is best for his international career.
